There were coffees on the menu for almost $50, which was the cheapest price. My leg bounced under the table, as I gnawed nervously on my index fingernail while me and Shantal tried to make sense of what I found out this morning. After my father opened his eyes, Maria kept knocking on the door like she was a task force officer. I had no clue what I should even do. One thing I knew was I couldn’t let that evil woman into this room, and I sure as hell couldn’t let her know my father was improving. “Daddy, it’s me, Caprice,” I spoke in a hushed tone as I leaned down closer to his face. His eyes locked with mine and I saw his lips twitch as though he was trying to say something. “Open up this door!” Maria yelled from behind the locked teak wood. “No, don’t try to say anything. I also want you to keep your eyes closed and don’t open them for anybody except for me. I’m about to let the nurse in. When I do, I want you to act like you’re still in a coma-like state. Do not let that nurse know that you can open your eyes. Blink twice if you understand me,” I instructed him as I held firmly to his hand. I waited and then he blinked a couple of times. I smiled and nodded my head at him. “Ok, go ahead and close them.” My father did as he was told and shut his eyes.“We’ll figure this out, Daddy. I promise.” Those were my last words
