“A Review of the Housing Situation” presents a 1927 statement by the National Housing Committee for Congested Areas, framed around how New York should address slum conditions. The text argues that effective slum eradication and housing relief require municipal action by State and City rather than private philanthropy. It describes conclusions drawn after August Heckscher’s study in Europe, and outlines a proposed plan using enabling legislation and semi-municipal housing through street widening, parks, excess condemnation, and leasing land for model tenements.
