A Primer in Petri Net Design

Oct 13, 2026

A Primer in Petri Net Design explains system design through the use of Petri nets, treating systems broadly as organizational contexts where controlled flows of objects and information matter. The book introduces multiple Petri-net models for representing specific kinds of systems, emphasizing that the models share common interpretation patterns and form a unified method for expressing systems at different levels of refinement. Its approach avoids heavy mathematics by providing an illustrated, practical description of system modeling principles.

The scope of applications of Petri nets has increased since a first edition (in German)ofthis text appeared in 1985.A whole range of software tools are now available and a lotof case studies can now be referred to.However, aside from these additions, the coretext representing Petri nets as a method for system modelling remained valid and isessentially unchanged. The original text was based on courses the author developed forproject engineers and project managers in the area of embedded computer systems.Iwould like to thank the participants in these courses,G.Feistel and H.Keil from theSiemens School for Microcomputers in Düsseldorf, and W.Brauer and P.Schnupp fornumerous suggestions, and Franz Goltz for the original illustrations. FAQs

What is the book’s main focus?

The book focuses on system design using Petri nets, especially for organizational systems involving regulated flows of objects and information.

How does the book present Petri nets as a modeling method?

It introduces various Petri-net models suited to specific systems and explains how they relate through shared interpretation patterns, forming a coherent representation method.

Does the book rely heavily on mathematics?

No. It provides an illustrated description of system modeling principles with nets, aiming to avoid going into the mathematics behind them.
