A Little Survivor follows Ryan Fuller through a quiet, exhausted night in an aging apartment after a punishing day on a brutal construction site. Cop drama plays in the background while Ryan wrestles with pain, routine, and strained relationships, especially with his sister. As unease grows “deep in his gut,” he listens to the building and its neighbors, sensing something about to happen before he can fully explain it. The opening chapter builds tension through physical detail and instinct.

The armrests were dark with oil from his skin. The cushion sagged in the middle exactly where his weight settled every night. His boots were off. His socks were damp from sweat. The construction site had been brutal today, fourteen hours of hauling lumber and shouting over the noise of heavy machinery. His back ached. His hands were stiff. The beer bottle in his grip was cold and half empty. He stared at the TV without really watching it. Some cop show. Flashing lights. Dramatic music. He wasn't paying attention. His mind was still on the job, on the crew he had to manage tomorrow, on the lumber delivery that better show up on time or he'd have words with the supplier. The guy who ran the lumber yard was always trying to short them. Always claiming the good wood was backordered. Ryan had dealt with him for three years now, and the dance never changed. The apartment was quiet except for the TV and the hum of the refrigerator. The fridge had been making that sound for six months, a low rattle that kicked on every twenty minutes. Ryan kept meaning to fix it. He kept not getting around to it. He took another swallow of beer. The liquid was bitter and cold on his tongue. He held it in his mouth for a second before swallowing, feeling the chill slide down his throat. He thought about heating up leftovers from the fridge. He thought about calling his sister back. She'd left a voicemail three days ago. He kept forgetting. She'd probably be pissed. She always got pissed when he didn't call back fast enough. But he'd been working doubles all week and by the time he got home, all he wanted was silence anda cold beer. His sister didn't understand that. She had a husband and two kids and a house in the suburbs. She didn't know what it was like to come home to an empty apartment every night, too tired to do anything but sit in the dark and drink. He shifted in the recliner, trying to find a position that didn't make his lower back scream. The muscle just above his left hip was knotted tight. He could feel it pulsing, a dull throb that never quite went away. Forty wasn't that far away and his body was already reminding him of every stupid thing he'd done in his twenties. The time he'd tried to lift a steel beam by himself because he was too proud to ask for help. The time he'd fallen off a scaffold and landed on his tailbone. The time he'd thought he was invincible and learned he wasn't. He rolled his shoulders, trying to work out the stiffness. The joints popped. His neck was tight too. He'd been looking up all day, running conduit through the ceiling joists. His body was a map of every job he'd ever worked. The scar on his right forearm from a nail gun. The crooked pinky finger that had been broken in a bar fight and never set right. The ache in his knees that promised arthritis down the road. The TV droned on. The cop was interrogating a suspect. The suspect was lying. Ryan had seen this episode before, or maybe he hadn't. They all blurred together after a while. The same plot. The same twists. The same dramatic music swelling at the c
