It is a counter joy to all the commer-cialising of the Christmas season in thismaterialistic age, that every year carolsinging and Carol Services becomeever more popular._This is surelybecause,as Percy Dearmer wrote,"the typical carol gives voice to thecommon emotions of healthy peoplein language that can be understoodand music that can be shared by all.Because it is popular it is thereforegenial as well as simple;it dancesbecause it is so Christian, echoingSt.Paul's conception of the fruits ofthe Spirit in its challenge to be merry一'Love and joy come to you'.Indeed,to take life with real serious-ness is to take it joyfully, for serious-ness is only sad when it is superficial:the carol is thus all the nearer to theultimate truth because it is jolly”.It gives me much pleasure, therefore,to welcome this attractive little book, which contains so many of our oldestand best loved carols,in the knowledgethat it can bring only joy in a daywhen this is so sorely needed. O Little Town O little town of Bethlehem,How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shinethThe everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee to-night. Omorning stars, togetherProclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King,And peace to men on earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And,gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keepTheir watch of wondering love.
