Autobiographical reflections by Nobel Prize winner George A. Olah trace a scientific life shaped by research, teaching, and evolving curiosity about the broader meaning and limits of science. The narrative frames chemistry as an extraordinarily wide “central science,” connects personal milestones to major intellectual pursuits, and discusses the philosophical questions science cannot fully answer. The author explains that the title reflects discoveries in extremely strong “superacids,” also called “magic acids,” alongside the excitement of chemistry’s scope.

For years I resisted, mainly because I was still fully occupied with research, teaching, and various other commitments. I also felt it was not yet time to look back instead of ahead. However, I slowly began to realize that, because none of us knows how much time is still left, it might be ill advised to say ‘‘it is not yet the right time.’’ I therefore started to collect material and to organize my thoughts for a book. It soon became clear that this project would be very different from any writing I had done before. I recognized that my goal was not only to give autobiographical recollections of my life and my career in chemistry but also to express some of my more general thoughts. These touch on varied topics, including the broader meaning of science in the quest fo

FAQs

Why did George A. Olah choose the title “A Life of Magic Chemistry”?

He chose it because his work centered on discovering extremely strong “superacids,” also called “magic acids,” and because chemistry’s broad scope makes it an exciting “central science.”

What broad questions does Olah say science cannot fully resolve?

He notes that science leads to fundamental questions about origins and whether a higher intelligence planned our being, and that some answers remain beyond science’s reach.

How does the book describe the journey of Olah’s career and life?

It portrays a long journey from Budapest through Cleveland to Los Angeles, with a side trip to Stockholm, alongside evolving scientific interests and commitments.
