Sep 29, 2026

A History of Musical Instruments traces how instrument shapes and playing styles changed with music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, Baroque, and into modern times. It explains shifts from church-centered music to more dramatic solo and public concert settings, and highlights orchestral development through new instrument designs, keys, and valves. The narrative uses museum examples, including the harp, medieval fiddle, and a carved angel with a lute, to connect specific instruments to broader cultural history.

THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

# School Picure Set A History ofMusical Instruments The Metropolitan Museum of Art # A HISTORY OFMUSICAL INSTRUMENTS by Edith Watts The shapes and sounds of instruments followfashions in music. When musical styles change, instruments change, too. In the Middle Ages, whenthis history begins, woodwinds, strings, and drumsaccompanied folk singing and dancing. Most writ-ten music, however, was for the church and wassung, not played. It was not until the Renaissance, about 1400 to 1600,that instrumental music be-came an art separate from singing and dancing. Renaissance composers gave each instrument anequal voice in their works.A fashion of the 17thcentury was to play solo instruments against anorchestral background. This new, dramatic style, the Baroque, emphasized grandeur in all the arts.No wonder opera was a Baroque idea Except for opera and church music, concertswere exclusive affairs performed in palaces byorchestras of strings and woodwinds. After about1750 concerts were held in large public halls.Com-posers required powerful orchestras with a varietyof instruments that could express different emo-tions.New kinds of instruments were added to theconcert orchestra.Keys and valves were designedfor instruments that could not otherwise play allthe notes of the scale. From this period, whichlasted through the 19th century, came the sym-phony and symphony orchestra, and the accuracyand expressiveness of modern instruments. Composers today, inspired by outer space, innerfeelings, folk music, machines, and electronic de-vices,are creating new instruments and discover-ing new ways of playing the old ones. 1.HARP PLAYER,King David, detail of an anonymouswoodcut, from the Nuremberg Bible,German,1483.Harris Brisbane Dick Fund,1931 ## THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART Archaeologists have found harps nearly fivethousand years old in royal graves of Asia Minor.During the Middle Ages harps similar to the oneheld by this king were carried from castle tocastle by minstrels, who spread the latest newsand entertained with songs and juggling. To be-come members of the symphony orchestra, harpshave had to grow.Modern harps have forty-seven strings and seven pedals, which enableeach string to produce three different tones.Hence, the harp can sound all the whole notesand half notes of the scale. 2.MEDIEVAL FIDDLE(detail),tempera on wood,by an unknown Spanish painter, middle of the 15th cen-tury.The Michael Friedsam Collection,1931 THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART This courtly lady is playing an ancestor of theviolin.Fiddles of various designs were the mostpopular instruments in the Middle Ages. 3.ANGEL WITH A LUTE,painted wood, south Ger-man,about 1500.The Cloisters Collection.Gift of Mrs.John D.Rockefeller,Jr.,1947 THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART Lutes, fiddles, organs, trumpets, and drums werebrought to Europe from the Near East during theearly Middle Ages. Our word “lute”comes fromthe Arabic name for the instrument,el oud(elood). This carved-wood angel, plucking thestrings of a lute,is one of a pair that once dec-orated a German chapel.
