She’d dreamed of homes like this when she was Briana’s age. Safe homes, homes with people who only wanted the best for you, were willing to make sacrifices for you instead of just sacrificing you. She couldn’t possibly give Briana all that the Jaces’ had given her; she didn’t know the first thing about parenting. And she wasn’t a patient person, and her moral compass had never pointed in the direction of right with any regularity. Oh God, oh God, oh God…What the hell was she doing here? She would ruin this kid. Zeus banged on the passenger door. She jumped, but kept her head pressed against her knees, curled in fetal position as much as the passenger seat would allow. There was a much more restrained tap against the window, and Sabrina lifted her head just enough to turn it to the right and see that familiar fitted dark gray t-shirt overlapping the waistband of Zeus’s black jeans. Damn. Sitting up, Sabrina rolled down the window midway. On the other side of the pane, Zeus’s fingers did a choreographed dance. She called this particular sequence the woman’s-testing-my-patience dance. Her facial muscles relaxed into a soft smile. He was keeping to their bargain; no blades within visibility of the Jace’s; no actions to scare them away from relinquishing Briana to their care. She began trembling internally again. Despite her unconditional love for the little girl inside the house across the street, she was having misgivings, when Zeus – a man more comfortable with wildlife than people – had none. Placing his arms on the roof of the car, Zeus bent down and held her gaze, silently communicating his impatience that she was wasting time trying to corral her foolish ‘woman’s brain chatter’, when she should be outside standing beside him. She wanted his clarity of purpose, his uncompromising certainty that this was the right thing to do. “What if she sees me, like really sees me, Zeus – the way that only kids can – then decides she doesn’t want to be with us?
