3D: What Happened To It And A0 Gares - Informal Commentary on Theatre & Films

Sep 21, 2026

Film industry discussion explaining why 3-D failed, framed through historical examples and technical causes of audience discomfort. Covers how early 3-D projection and filming required strict optical discipline: maintaining sharp focus across the frame, matching shot-to-shot distances, continual depth control, and precise projector alignment using overlap within strict tolerances. Contrasts military-tested procedures that prevented eyestrain with Hollywood production choices that ignored expert rules, leading to headaches and dim images.

FILM 3D:WHAT HAPPENED T0 IT AND A0 GARES? To keep you from skipping this issue en-tirely,we'il answer the second questionfirst.Stereo photography experiments arestill being conducted, and with the recentadvances in laser research it appears that3-D movies are going to be backin theatreseventually. So you might as well care, forif Hollywood repeats its previous sort ofmistake, complaints of eyestrain, dimnessand headaches will recur andimportantphotographie advancements will, once again, meet public rejection. Here,then,1s the story of why"3-D"failed.As far as we know,it's never beenprinted anywhere...but it's true.Ne won'tidentify our sources, though, nor the com-panies and individuals involved,so that wecan speak freely. Anyone remember the 1939 New York Norld'sFair?A three-dimensional color short wasshown to thousands every day without anycomplaints,or even objections to wearingthe polarized glasses. If stereoscopicfilms could be projected perfectly then, how come the product was often shoddy(andultimately unnarketable)during the 3-D"boom"around 1952? Basically, the reason was certain pro-ducers'refusal to listen to the expertswhen shooting their first full-lengthstereo movies for commercial release.Dis-daining the advice of experienced people, they violated a few vitai optical rules, and the public suffered. By 1951,some military photo units hadcompleted extensive experiments with two-camera,two-projector,polarized movies. The fiims they made, resulting from yearsof testing, were free from eyestrain, easyto watch, tecanically perfect and most ef-fectively three-dimensional.But specialfilming and projection procedures had to befollowed or the movies degenerated into amigraine mess. For example. SHARP FOCUS TAIROUGHOUT THE FRAME.Inshooting a routine two-dimensional scene,1t's customary to use"selective focus,"keeping the subject sharp while letting, say, the background go a bit blurry -toreinforce the center of attention. But in3-D this must be rigorously avoided.Standin front of a window and hold your hand be-fore your face.Look at your hand, thenpast it to the scene outside。Notice howyour eyes adjust to the different distancesalmost imrediately;they re-focus constant-1y to keep everything they scan as sharp asposs1ble.In a 3-D movie scene, everythingyou might see, even in passing, must alsobe sharp or else your eyes will be strain-1ng to bring into focus areas the cameramanhas left hazy. SHOT-TO-SAOT MATCHING OF BFFZCT3. If anobject or person is close to the camera atthe end of one 3-D shot, the next shot mustbegin with another obJect or person at sim-1lar range. This rule may sound arbitrary, but it's not;the experts found that dis-tance discre pancies over a"cut"caused op-tical disorientation in the viewer, with amental disruption of continuity until theeyes could re-focus to te new range. CONTINUAL 3-D.The eye, researchers found,is confused by violent distance var- iances even within one shot --such as far 回AUDIENCE回 # Informal Commentary on Theatre &Films mountain3 baaind an actor very close to thecaera."Graded"srouoins of actors orfurcishings(near to far)were necessary ineaci scere. P30CCTOR ALIGNi3NT。Tis was the mostbothersome but important rule of them all. Before starting to run a day's schedule of3-D fi1ms,each set of projectors--twoper reel--had to be focused on the screenso that "infinity"(furthest-distance)ob-Jjects were precisely aligned. The projec-tioniat or an assistant was required towalk up to the screen with a ruler and ex-amine some point in the scene that was"atinfinity."Zor that point, the images fromthe two progectors should overlap or,atworst,be no more than -1nch apart later-ally--no vertical discrepancy could bepermitted at all.A nuisance?Sure, butwhen you look at the horizon, its left-eye and right-eye "infinity images"coin-cide exactiy in your own vision.and iftais register is not duplicated in stereo-sco pic fi1m projection, your eyes struggleto correct an unnatural zisalignment;s0there you are, cnce

FAQs

Why does the document say 3-D failed in theaters?

It attributes failure to producers ignoring expert optical rules during shooting and projection, causing eyestrain, headaches, and poor visual comfort.

What optical rule does the text describe to avoid eyestrain?

It emphasizes sharp focus throughout the frame, warning that in 3-D everything must remain sharp or viewers strain to refocus for hazy areas.

How does the document explain problems caused by scene changes between shots?

It states that shot-to-shot matching of effect range is required; distance discrepancies over a cut can cause optical disorientation and disrupt visual continuity.
