2016 VATE ENGLISH SAMPLE EXAM Section C-Supplementary material prepared by Anthony Quirk NB: This is a comprehensive and detailed sample analysis of the language used in the texts in Section C. Students’ responses will be shorter and less detailed, reflecting exam conditions and time limits. Text 1-Principal's email The email opens with a sober, authoritative tone which demands that parents take the email seriously. The metaphor,“in the wake of”, has connotations of a calamitous aftermath of a tidal wave causing devastating destruction and hence garnering support for the idea of a need to repair any bad feeling. The principal’s formal language,“serious and unsettling series of events”, adds to the sense of gravity, particularly with the harsh sibilant ‘s’ sound. She (or he –just choose one rather than pointing out that it could be either) appeals to the parental desire for students to have a balanced and uninterrupted year given the importance of the VCE. The repetition of “all” and the inclusive “our students” enhance a sense of community and portrays the school as supportive in order to counter any lingering animosity over punishment to students. The direct appeal in “you” personalises the email and adds to this feeling. The school is depicted as impartial and professional (discreet and in control) in its dealings with students to this point – something enhanced by the observation that it would be “not fitting” to reveal details that would identify individual students for criticism. The forcefulness of the alliterative “pertinent point” adds to the authoritative tone that begs due consideration of advice. The fact that the principal wants to “reiterate” school policy alludes to the consistency of the school’s adherence to the policy, countering any accusation that the school has not understood, or met, its obligation in regards to the matter. The second paragraph starts with the inclusive “we”. Whilst it is used to identify the school leadership (possibly promoting a sense of consensus in commitment to the policies), it also enhances the feeling of community developed in paragraph one. The formalised title of the policy also elevates the feeling of professionalism and competence, yet the possible coldness and distance it presents is negated by thereassurance,“ensure that each and every one” – something that accentuates the feeling that the school has a keen appreciation of all students. The inclusive “our students” is repeated here to underscore this notion and is backed up with the use of “our community” along with the personalising direct appeal,“your son or daughter”. Combined with the repetition of “safe”, this also appeals to the parental desire for a school to ensure such a positive and supportive environment for their child to learn in and feel cared for. This is validated by the use of expert and authority figure,“Senior Constable Sandra Templeton”. The consistent commitment of the school to students’welfare is underlined by the reference to the expert being used to guide and counsel students at the “annual” event where she “again alerted” students to danger in online This material cannot be reproduced whole or part thereof without the permission of the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English. © 2016 Victorian Association for the Teaching of English communication. Given the context of the conflict,“alerted” has an emotive function and carries associations with imminent peril (added to by the use of the noun “pitfalls”) requiring the kind of diligent care and vigilance the school is providing. The feeling of imminent danger contrasts with the threat that comes from outside the protective purview of the school with the reference to “unscrupulous behaviour of individuals from outside”. Given the prevalent fear that exists in response to frequent news stories of child molestation and online grooming, this is a powerful appeal to parents’desire to keep their child safe, even at the age of 17 or
