Weekly learning plan for first-grade students covering literacy and math activities for the period April 27th through May 1st. In this book, two sisters, Zelda and Ivy, have some adventures together. Each day, you will be reading a chapter of the book. Use your Be the Boss of Your Reading chart and all you know about figuring out tricky words to read the book (by turning off the volume) and then listen to the story. Read Chapter 1 (pages 1-15, stop the video at 3:03) .
| | | After reading the first chapter, go back through what you read to look for compound words. Compound words are words that are made of two or more small words, joined together to create a new word that has a new meaning. For example, the words butter and fly can be put together to make the compound word butterfly.
Look back through the chapter and see how many compound words you can find! Write them down and then circle the smaller words hiding inside. It’s important to notice compound words because you can chunk them apart and read the smaller words you know to read longer words more easily. | | --- | --- | | |
Read on MyOn or PebbleGo or RazKids for 20 minutes!! | | | Day 2: Read Chapter 2 in Zelda and Ivy (Start at 3:03 on Page 17 and Stop at 5:00 on Page 27) . As you read, make sure to be the Boss of your reading and use all the habits you’ve learned for solving hard words. You can keep the sound off and tackle the words on your own using the chart below or leave the sound on and read along. Pick the challenge that is best for you right now!

After you read the 2nd chapter, we have a writing challenge for you. In this part of the book, Zelda and Ivy make a Time Capsule to share with other kids in the future. If you could make a time capsule to share about your life as a 1st grader with kids in the | | | future, what would you put in it and why? Choose carefully! Remember, Zelda and Ivy changed their minds and had to change what they put in their time capsule.

The title of this chapter is The Secret Concoction. A concoction is like a potion or a liquid you make by mixing different ingredients together.
Take a look at the first couple pages of this chapter. What do you see Ivy doing and saying? After taking your sneak peek, write down a 1-3 sentence prediction about what will happen in this chapter. Make sure to answer, what kind of concoction do you think Ivy has made? What is it for and what do you think will happen to the characters?
Read the 3rd chapter of Zelda and Ivy. After you’ve read it, look back at your prediction. Was it accurate? Did something completely different happen? Write another 1-3 sentences telling how what you predicted was the same or different from the actual story.

Authors often use numbers in written form to describe objects or things happening in stories. ● write the numbers 1-20
● write the words for each of the numbers (1= one, 2 = two, etc…)

What literacy reading is assigned for Day 1?

Students read Chapter 1 of Zelda and Ivy, using the reading habits and a “Be the Boss of Your Reading” chart, and then look for compound words in the chapter.

What writing challenge is included on Day 2?

After reading Chapter 2, students create a time capsule idea for future kids and write at least 3–5 sentences explaining what they would include and why.

What math activities are planned during the week?

Students complete counting collections, solve bread-and-sandwich counting questions, find which expression doesn’t belong, and participate in a number talk with materials provided on the day.
