10-Search and Find explains a classroom method for creating secret codes using coordinate graphs. Letters are placed at specified coordinate positions, and decoded words require entering the horizontal coordinate first. Learners practice by spelling words from given coordinate sequences and converting set words into coded coordinate forms. The booklet also includes an introduction to the Papua New Guinea School Journal Senior 2, its teaching purpose, and publication acknowledgements, along with copyright and usage restrictions.

10-Search and Find School Journal Senior 2, 2008-V1 .1 English In our Grade 7 class we were learning about coordinates in maths, and we found a new way of making secret codes. This is what we did. We drew a graph, and located letters at different coordinates. This is how Winkle’sand Shane's graph looked. 1 Then they spelt out words, using the coordinates on the graph. (They had to remember to always put the horizontal coordinate first.) Can you read the words they wrote, using the coordinates on the graph? 2 Check Your Understanding 1) Which coordinate goes first? a) Horizontal b) Vertical Check Your Understanding 2) Use the graph in the text to spell out these words. a. The Journal is intended as a teaching and reading resource and as supplementary reading and should be available for children to read in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to read a story from the Journal to their class every day, in this way their children will become familiar with the stories and will want to read them for themselves. The Journal was written and illustrated by Papua New Guinean writers and illustrators. The Department of Education wishes to acknowledge the support of the New Zealand Government in making these Journals available for the children of this country. FAQs

How is the secret code created in the activity?

A graph is drawn and letters are located at different coordinate positions. The horizontal and vertical coordinates determine each letter.

Which coordinate must be written first when decoding?

The horizontal coordinate must be put first, before the vertical coordinate.

How do learners use the given coordinate sets during practice?

Learners use the graph coordinates to spell words from provided coordinate sequences, and they also convert given words into coordinate codes.
