0610 Biology Past Papers 2010-2016 - Transport in Plants - Exam Questions

Sep 5, 2026

A collection of Biology exam-style questions focused on plant transport, covering how plants absorb and lose water, the roles of xylem and phloem, and adaptations of root hair cells. Learners apply concepts such as water potential, transpiration, translocation, diffusion and osmosis to interpret diagrams and predict outcomes under altered environmental conditions. Includes tasks that assess the effects of removing bark or changing light, humidity, wind and water availability on plant growth and water movement.

FAQs

How do plants absorb and lose water?

Plants absorb water in liquid form and lose water mainly as vapour. The questions contrast absorption and loss using different states and processes.

What are the functions of xylem and phloem in transport?

Xylem transports water (and dissolved mineral ions), while phloem is adapted for translocation of sucrose and other substances. Questions also test what is present in xylem sap.

Which factors can increase transpiration or affect shoot appearance?

Higher humidity typically reduces transpiration, while conditions that promote transpiration—such as lower water availability, changes in light, and higher kinetic energy of water molecules—can increase water loss. The questions also link environmental changes to visible changes in shoots over time.
