For example, if the question asks you to “discuss the negative impact of tourism in some areas,” you would be wrong to write \n200 words about the history of tourism or about mostly positive effects of tourism or your holidays! Irrelevance will be penalized. TIP: Look back at the question frequently to ensure you are answering it. \n􀁸 You should write at least 200 words to fully develop your answer. \n􀁸 Points will be awarded for a good range of vocabulary, grammar and structures. \nIMPORTANT ELEMENTS \nIntroduction. \nThe introduction is a separate paragraph. Here you should make a general statement on the topic followed by an indication of your opinion. You should not go into too much detail as this will be done in the central (main body) paragraphs. It should be 3 to 5 lines long. \nExample. \nPAST WRITING QUESTION 2015 \n1. Many people play team sports rather than individual sports. What do you feel are the benefits of playing team sports compared to individual sports? And, personally which type of sports do you prefer? \nGOOD INTRODUCTION \nTeam sports are undoubtedly highly entertaining to watch and are extremely popular in almost every culture. There are several reasons why people tend to enjoy these more than individual sports and why they are more beneficial. \nThe first sentence is a general statement. The second shows that the writer is clearly in favour of team sports and we know they are going to give us “several reasons” \nBAD INTRODUCTION \nNowadays people prefer playing team sports rather than individual sports, especially among the youngsters, who hope to have the chance to keep in touch with new friends. This is especially true in high schools , for example in the school I attended. \nBut does it mean that team sports have more benefits than individual sports , or it doesn’t? \nThere is a general statement although the information about keep in touch with friends would be better placed in the main body as a supporting reason to the writers argument. The personal information about their high school is out of place in the introduction and finally the extra one-sentence paragraph is horrific. \nDo not insert one-sentence paragraphs as afterthoughts. Integrate them into the previous or next complete paragraph if they are relevant. \nTERRIBLE INTRODUCTION \nI believe that sport is very important for all ages of people. Ever since Roman and Greek times people play sports. It was believed to be healthy also for the mind hence the expression “healthy body, healthy mind”. Nowadays many more people do sport and they are living longer and are happier because of this. Personally I don’t do team or individual sports but when I will have more time in the future I would like to go swimming perhaps. There are many young people, students included, who don’t do sport, however, and they eat junk food and smoke . This is bad in my opinion (etc. etc. ) I will spare you the torture \nThis student goes on to write without any paragraphs. There is no logical place to divide into paragraphs anyway because it is a ramble of semi-associated points to the question. It does not begin to answer the question and does not/cannot be logically divided into phases/paragraphs. \nMany people play team sports rather than individual sports. What do you feel are the benefits of playing team sports compared to individual sports? And, personally which type of sports do you prefer? \nGood introduction 2 \nAlthough individual sports have their merits and are followed by people all around the world, they are nowhere near as popular as team sports. There are clear benefits to playing in","cbCaiobi0hms1rMn","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiobi0hms1rMn","pdf",424527,7,"English","# Students’ requirements for the writing section\n## Selecting a question and staying relevant\n## Formal style and word count\n# IMPORTANT ELEMENTS\n## Introduction\n## Main body or central paragraphs\n## Topic sentences and supporting detail","[{\"question\":\"How should students choose between the exam questions?\",\"answer\":\"Students must select ONE of the 2 or 3 questions on the writing paper.\"},{\"question\":\"What style and length are expected for the discursive composition?\",\"answer\":\"The composition should be written in more formal English aligned with academic writing, and students should write at least 200 words.\"},{\"question\":\"How should the introduction be structured?\",\"answer\":\"The introduction is a separate paragraph with a general statement on the topic followed by an indication of the writer’s opinion, kept to about 3 to 5 lines.\"}]","WRITING A DISCURSIVE COMPOSITION - GUIDE TO THE WRITING SECTION OF THE EXAM | PDF",1790080306]
