That's what word economy is all about, and if applied, it will do much to strengthen the writing of your students. \nIn general, when I revise a poem for word economy, I'm looking todo the following: \n1. Eliminate unnecessary word repetition \n2. Eliminate unnecessary adjectives, adverbs, or modifiers \n3. Eliminate words or phrases that are already implied \n4. Minimize use of articles \nFor the Michael Rosen anthology, Food Fight, I wrote a poem titled\"Pineapple Surprise.\" Here are two drafts ofthe poem. The version in the left column was the original draft. In the revision process, I focused on cutting the fat from the poem, by paying attention to the above. The final result is in the right column. \nMy grandma wasn't much for hugging. \nShe was entirely too frail to give me piggy-back ridesand moved too slow for games of hide and seek. But sometimes, \nwhile I played alone, she would magically appear \nwith pineapple upside-down cake \nwhich took considerable time to make, because of all those \nhoney-glazed pineapple rings clinging to the bottom— \nor were they \nclinging to the top? \nDotted with Maraschino cherries popping with tooth-tingling \ntangy sweetness \ntwo thick layers of the most buttery, gooey, scrumptiously chewy pineapple-licious yellow cake \nwhich grandma baked for nobody else but me. \nGrandma wasn't much for hugging. Maraschino cherries poping with tooth-tingling tangy sweetness, \ntwo thick layers of buttery, gooey, scrumptiously chewy pineapple-licious yellow cake baked for nobody else but me. \nHere's a second example of applying word economy to a poem. Again, the goal is to eliminate the fat to produce a tighter, smoother flowing draft. \nFirst Draft Second Draft \nWashing dishes Washing dishes \nI sink my hands into I sink my hands into \nrivers of soapy water rivers of soapy water \nsoft as sea foam. soft as sea foam. \nI close my eyes I close my eyes \nand float in the ocean, and float in the ocean, \nsun warming my cheeks, sun warming my cheeks, breeze tickling my skin breeze tickling my skin \nuntil I'm in until Mom yells, \"Gabby! \ntrouble with Mom Stop daydreaming \nwho yells, \"Gabby! and finish those dishes!\" \nStop daydreaming and finish those dishes!","cbCaithUgqKHTqL2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaithUgqKHTqL2","pdf",95512,"English","# Word economy overview\n## Revision goals\n## Example 1: Pineapple Surprise\n## Example 2: Washing dishes","[{\"question\":\"What is word economy in writing, according to the template?\",\"answer\":\"Word economy focuses on telling a story or painting a picture using as few words as possible while keeping meaning and imagery intact.\"},{\"question\":\"What revision steps does the template recommend for word economy?\",\"answer\":\"The template recommends eliminating unnecessary repetition, unnecessary adjectives/adverbs/modifiers, words or phrases already implied, and minimizing the use of articles.\"},{\"question\":\"How are the poem examples used to show word economy?\",\"answer\":\"Each example presents a first draft and a revised second draft, highlighting how “cutting the fat” creates a tighter, smoother flowing version.\"}]","Word Economy Exercise Template - Nikki Grimes | PDF"]
