Relatively few camps dotthe shoreline which remains largely forested andundeveloped.A newly upgraded public boatlaunching facility is maintained by Georgia-Pacific Corp.adjacent to the dam. Anglers canalso launch smali boats at a site at Farm Cove. \nThe salmon fishery, which is of statewidesignificance, attracts numerous non-residentsfrom the eastern seaboard every spring. The WestGrand Lake area supports the highest concentra-tion of sporting camps and guides in easternMaine. Many of the salmon populations nowestablished in eastern Maine result from WestGrand stocks. \nThe lake provides superb habitat forcoldwater sportfish. The salmon fishery ismaintained by annual stockings. Managementstrategy emphasizes the production of goodnumbers of 2-pound salmon. Growth rate isgenerally good with periods of excellent growth \ncorrelated with abundant populations of smelt.Thelong-term average length and weight of salmon angledin the spring is 16.6 inches and 1 pound,8 ounces, respectively. In the better years, between 40-508of the salmon harvest is comprised of fish weighing2 pounds or more. \nEvery fall, Grand Lake Stream hatcherypersonnel trap salmon above the dam to collect eggs. The fertilized eggs are hatched, and the youngsalmon are reared for stocking in numerous lakesthroughout Maine. \nThe lake supports a good lake trout fishery.Although occasional stockings were made throughoutthe 1980's,recent data show that naturally producedlake trout are increasingly abundant. The fisheryis now sustained by wild fish. Most angled togueweigh from 3-31/2 pounds although 4-6 pound fishare not uncommon. The lake is one of the top threeproducers of trophy lake trout in eastern Maine.Georgia-Pacific Corp.,which controls the lakelevel, attempts to maintain a stable water levelfrom October 15-April 1 to enhance naturalreproduction of lake trout. \nDuring the winter, the lake supports easternMaine's most important lake whitefish fishery.TheBear Island-Junior Bay area isespeciallyproductive. A sizeable \"village\"of ice shacksappears each winter as anglers concentrate onwhitefish. Some anglers catch limits of 8 fish onthe better days. Although more 18 inch whitefishhave been caught in recent years,a distinctivefeature of this fishery is the general lack of sizevariation. Most whitefish measure from 15-16 inchesand weigh 11/4 pounds,2 ounces to 1 pound,4ounces. \nSmallmouth bass provide a seasonally importantfishery in the summer. In an effort to increaseabundance of larger bass,an experimental slot limitis in effect.
