It guides teams to download and study a Volere requirements specification template, assess project viability using the first eight template items, and confirm “Go or NoGo” readiness before deeper discovery. We felt that it was time to summarize some of the experience and produce a guide to making a start using the Volere approach to improve your requirements. \n1. Download the Requirements Specification Template \nDownload the Volere requirements specification template from \nhtt~~p~~docu://wwment[w](w.volere.co.uk/ This)[.volere.co.uk/](w.volere.co.uk/ This)[ This](w.volere.co.uk/ This) is used as the foundation of any requirements \n2. Familiarise Yourself with the Template \nThe template is a guide to the knowledge that you need to gather in order to specify the requirements for a product. The product is often a piece of software, but it could also be a piece of hardware, a consumer product, a set of procedures or anything else that is the focus of a project. The template acts as a checklist of the requirements knowledge with which you need to be concerned. \n3. Starting Your Project \nThe first eight items in the template establish the viability of the project. Each item should be complete enough for you to feel confident that you know enough to proceed with gathering the requirements. We will discuss how. \nPROJECT DRIVERS: \n1. The Purpose of the Product \n2. Client, Customer, Stakeholders \n3. Users of the Product \nÊ \nPROJECT CONSTRAINTS: \n4. Mandated Constraints \n5. Naming Conventions and Definitions \n6. Relevant Facts and Assumptions \nÊ \nVolere-Getting Started Copyright Atlantic Systems Guild Ltd 1 \nFUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: \n7. The Scope of the Work \n8. The Scope of the Product \nFor each of these items, look at the guidance in the template for a description of what you are expected to determine. Then ask: \n• What knowledge do I have about this item? \n• Where is this knowledge and what form is it in? \n• Who can help me with this item? \nRecord your answers separately for each section. In some cases, especially for 7 – Scope of the work and 8 – Scope of the product, it might be useful to sketch some kind of model. There are also models that help determine the stakeholders (anyone with an interest in the product, and therefore has requirements for it) . Also, there is an article about Stakeholders, Goals and Scope at [http://www.volere.co.uk/stakegoalsscope.htm](http://www.volere.co.uk/stakegoalsscope.htm that will give you)[ that will give you](http://www.volere.co.uk/stakegoalsscope.htm that will give you)[ ](http://www.volere.co.uk/stakegoalsscope.htm that will give you)[some guidance on capturing this knowledge.](some guidance on capturing this knowledge.) \n4. Go or NoGo? \nReview what you have recorded about each of the eight sections. Is your knowledge of that item is sufficient for you to be able to start working on the detailed requirements? \n• Is the purpose of the project defined by measurable goals? \n• Do I know who all the stakeholders are? \n• Are the stakeholders prepared to participate in the project? \n• Do I know the scope of your investigation? \n• Do I know the ambitions for the scope of product to be built? \nIf you have items that are vague or ambiguous (or just plain vacuous), then it is a signal that you need to spend more time on the first 8 items on the list before starting to discover detailed requirements. Keep in mind that nothing that follows can be good if this part of the specification isn’t forming a solid foundation. \nWe call this process a project blastoff – you are checking that everything isin place and ready before launching the detailed requirements discovery. \nVolere-Getting Started Copyright Atlantic Systems Guild Ltd 2 \n5. Identify Events and Use Cases \nWhen you have decided that your blastoff knowledge is sufficient to proceed with detailed requirements work, the next task is partitioning the investigation. The work context in section 7 defines the scope of your study.
