Use this high-level visioning activity to lead a conversation with your team about what sustainability looks like to them and what it will take to achieve that vision. Creating a sustainability vision can be a first step toward a detailed sustainability plan. Together, these elements can help ensure your team’s work continues when the Project Impact grant ends.  \nObjectives  \n/ To outline your team’s vision for project sustainability  \n/ To begin thinking about goals and action steps that will support your vision for project sustainability  \n/ To identify strengths and challenges that can help or hinder your vision for sustainability  \nMaterials  \n/ Vision for Project Sustainability template  \nDirections  \nProject sustainability  \nSustaining your project means ensuring it survives and thrives in the long term. When planning for sustainability, consider how you will sustain the following:  \n• Funding  \n• Staffing, including the employing appropriate number of staff and ensuring their skills and capacities can carry your project forward  \n• Project outcomes (your project can evolve as long as you continue to meet project goals)  \n1. Share the template and gather your team. Using the Share button in the upper right corner, share the Google Slides template linked in the Materials section with your team so all members can review the template before your vision meeting. Then, gather your team to complete the template.  \n2. Outline your guiding principles. With your team, outline as many as four guiding principles that are key for the success of your project. For example, if community input is a key part of your project, one of your guiding principles might be: We will regularly seek input from program participants and community partners about our services.  \n3. Write a sustainability vision. With your team, draft a vision for project sustainability. Your vision should articulate what sustainability means for your project. To do this, write a detailed description of the following:  \na. What your project will look like in the future, including which stakeholders will be involved and what they will be doing  \nb. What outcomes the project will achieve in the future, including for staff and participants  \nExample sustainability vision  \nIn three years, four full-time staff members and two volunteers will operate our drop-in center for unhoused individuals [daily from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. At](daily from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. At) least one staff member or volunteer will have lived experience with homelessness and will play a key role in making decisions about service offerings and staff or volunteer trainings. All staff and volunteers will have the skills to de-escalate potential conflicts among clients at the center. Within five years, we will achieve the following outcomes:  \n• Full-time staff will regularly report high levels of energy and engagement (lack of burnout) .  \n• Staff and volunteers will be trained in de-escalating conflicts among clients.  \n• Increased staff capacity will mean the center will turn away no more than 5 percent of clients each month.  \n4. Brainstorm goals.  \na. Think of your vision as your destination. It’s where you ultimately want to land in terms of project sustainability. With your team, consider the goals you must reach to fulfill your project vision. You can think of these as short-, medium-, and long-term goals. Alternatively, your goals can relate to three topics and could be accomplished concurrently. One framework to help your team draft goals uses SMART criteria to create goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, with defined start and end dates.
