It is thought that this holiday’s origins are in the ancientRoman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annuallyon February 15. The Roman Catholic Church changed this to February 14around 496. \nThere are three main Christian legends about St. Valentine: \n* \n* \n* \nHe was a priest who continued to perform marriagesafter the Roman Emperor outlawed marriage. \nHe was killed trying to rescue Christians imprisoned fortheir faith. \nHe fell in love with a jailor’s daughter while he was inprison for his faith. \nValentine’s Ideas - Page 3 \n# VALENTINE’SIDEAS\n\nPage 4 - Valentine’s Ideas \nKids naturally have questions about love, what it means, what it looks like, howto express and receive it. Valentine’s day is a fantastic opportunity to start aconversation with your kids about true love and what it really means. Try toget intergenerational, build authentic relationships and make a few noteworthymemories together as a family or as a church. \nWe have put together the ideas below to help you get started: \n* \n* \n## Write Jesus a love letter\n\nHave children make and decorate cards. After talking about Jesusand his love for us have them write inside the cards a private loveletter to Jesus (or just a letter to Jesus) . \n## 1 Corinthians 13 heart garland\n\nTo make this DIY heart garland, allyou dois fold a fanin stripsabout 6.5cm wide. Next, draw a half a heart connected on bothsides as shown below. Cut it out. \nOlder kids can write the passage on the hearts. \nIf your kids are younger write the different elements of the verseson each individual heart. As you write each one down discuss themeaning with your kids. \nIdea borrowed from http://meaningfulmama.com \nValentine’s Ideas - Page 5 \n## * Make a bird feeder\n\nLove is not only for humans to show to other humans, we canshow love to our environment and help the creatures in ourneighbourhood. Making bird feeders is such a fun activity to dowith the kids, and a great way to show our love and appreciationfor our feathered friends. \nThere are a number of different recipes online, some usingvegetable shortening, others using gelatine or peanut butter. \nChoose a recipe that works for you. \nEither make these with your kids and have a conversation aboutGods love for creation. Or for Sabbath school pre-make theseand have the children package them for their families or churchmembers with notes about how we love them and possibly includea bible verse. \nIdea borrowed from http://alphamom.com/ \nhttp://www.wineandglue.com/ \nhttp://giving.innerchildfun.com/ \nPage 6 - Valentine’s Ideas \nGifts and craft’s for kids to create for others \nHave the kids in the Sabbath school classes create something to give to allthe adults in church or to their neighbours to tell them that they love them andappreciate them.
