It explains why disaster planning prevents panic, disarray, and damaging mistakes, especially for a small unit vulnerable to basement location and proximity to the Detroit River. The plan covers disaster prevention through a checklist for climate, building structure, fire prevention and security, and storage controls, and it sets goals for preparedness, rapid recovery, and post-disaster strategies. Disaster management will avoid panic, disarray, and damaging mistakes in the event of a catastrophe. Although prevention is an important consideration, some disasters will remain beyond our control. \nThe University of Windsor Archives, Rare Books, and Special Collections is a relatively small unit and is particularly vulnerable to disastrous events. A small staff and limited resources require that disaster recovery involve a large number of untrained volunteers. To guide all stages of disaster recovery, the plan must be simple yet comprehensive. \nThe goals of the University of Windsor Archives disaster plan are: \n1. Implement disaster prevention policies. \n2. Develop disaster preparedness. \n3. Maximize the speed and efficiency of recovery. \n4. Establish post‐disaster strategies. \nCopies of the completed plan must be distributed to the following: \n􀁸 All members of the Archives staff, the library staff and the disaster teams \n􀁸 Fire and police departments \n􀁸 The University's insurance company and legal representative \nCopies of the plan must be maintained off‐site for reference in case of an emergency. \nArchives Disaster Plan (web version) 3 \nDISASTER PREVENTION \nMany disasters are unavoidable; however certain measures can be adopted to avoid or minimize damage. Through an analysis of the Archive's current situation, preventive procedures can be developed. These policies are vital due to the risks associated with the geographical location of the Archives, which are situated in the basement of the Leddy Library and close to the Detroit River. \nPrevention Checklist: \n1.
