\n·Does fresh water from theKennebec River affecr CascoBay?The Kennebec River isnot part of the Casco Baywatershed, yet unexplainedcontaminants are found in theeastern portion of the bay.Arethese pollutants carried downthe Kennebec River and trans-ported and deposited intoCasco Bay? \n·Does poor watercirculation magnifythe effects of algalblooms in MaquoitBay,in Casco Bay'snorthern reaches?In1988,an algal bloomdepleted oxygen lev-els in Maquoit Bay,resulting in a devas-tatingly high mortali-ty of marine organ-isms. \nTo answer these questions and to better understandhow water moves in the bay,the Casco Bay EstuaryProject commissioned a study to model water circula-tion.Dr.Bryan Pearce,Dr.Neal Pettigrew, and BinGong from the University of Maine Department ofCivil and Environmental Engineering developed theCasco Bay Circulation Model. This model character-izes the influences and patterns of water circulation inCasco Bay.This fact sheet explains some of the factorsaffecting circulation and how the model helps us graspthe way water moves in the bay \nHow Water Moves in Casco Bay \nThe tides, wind, temperature, salinity, and theI carths gravity all influence how water circulatesin Casco Bay.Water circulation is dominated by thetides, alchough other forces are interrelated and worktogether to strengthen or dampen the currents. \nA message in a bottle \nIf you put a note in a bottle and throw it into the bay.will it wash up in Freeport.Cape Cod,Nova Scotia.orEurope? It all depends on where and when you throwyour bottle into the bay and how long it stays afloat. \nfyou toss your bottle off the shore of Maquoit Bayduring a dry spell, chances are it will wash ashore inFreeport or Brunswickwithout much fanfare. On the other hand, ifduring an outgoing tide, you toss your bottle off adock on the exposedshore of one of CascoBay's islands,it willlikelybe carried out to theGulf of Maine.Once inthe Gulf it will slowly cir- \nculate counterclockwise \nin the Gulf of Maine Gyre, coming close to Cape Codbut turning eastward out to sea and then northwardtoward Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy. It may turnwestward and continue down the Maine coast towardCasco Bay again, making a loop in about three months. \nIf your bottle tracked more southerly near CapeCod,it could float across Georges Bank and get pickedup by the Gulf Stream. The trip across the AtlanticOcean would be much warmer than the float withinthe Gulf of Maine, and with luck,in six or seven weeksthe bottle may turn up in Ireland,or maybe evenPortugal. \nThis assumes your bottle is floating on the surface, but if your bottle could float 100 meters below thesurface in the Gulf of Maine,it would folow a differenttrack At that depth, temperature, salinity, and thecharacter of the bottom play a large role in dictatingcurrents and water fiow.Your bottle may take up to ayear to complete its tour of the Gulf of Maine. And ifthe botle is de","cbCainyKWlebRTvr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainyKWlebRTvr","pdf",775145,"English","# Understanding Casco Bay: A Circulation Study\n## How Water Moves in Casco Bay\n## A Message in a Bottle\n## Tides\n## Wind\n## Temperature","[{\"question\":\"What factors dominate water circulation in Casco Bay?\",\"answer\":\"Water circulation is dominated by tides, while wind, temperature, salinity, and gravity interact with the tidal forces to strengthen or dampen currents.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the tidal cycle affect currents and mixing in the bay?\",\"answer\":\"Casco Bay has a semidiurnal tidal cycle, with tidal levels fluctuating over the month.
