Although he was known for his magnanimous character , direct personality and love of booze and Tao , he is now known for his landscape painting. In his early study of painting , he followed the style of Shantung artist Li Cheng (919-967) . Later , however , he realized that if he really wanted to depict the earth , he should accept nature as his teacher , not other artists or their works. After all , the personal landscape exists in nature and in the mind. The K'uan thereupon fan went to Mount Hua and retired among the forests and mountains , dedicated to observing the impact of atmospheric , weather and seasonal changes on landscapes. His contemporaries then praised him for being able to communicate with the mountains. This masterpiece is a testament to his skills and ideas in landscape painting. The clusters of vegetation at the top of the high mountain here are actually distant forests clinging to unstable perches. Running along the central axis of the scroll , the central mountain dominates the stage in the classic example of the monumental landscape painting of the Northern Song. The roofs of the construction complex stand out in the right center. A cluster of rocks in the right foreground is the path through which the mule train passes. The cascade is as thin as silk falls from a height above , culminating in a stream rushing down into the vortexes to the foreground. \nFrom near and far , Fan Kuan described with realistic details the solemn majesty of the majestic landscape. The Kuan fan rendered the mountains and slopes with jagged strokes of contour and filled them with brush smears resembling raindrops-techniques that emphasize the monumental and eternal features of the mountains. To the right of the mule train , among the leaves , is the signature of Fan Kuan , the final touch of the artist , to embody the insignificance of people (including themselves) compared to nature. Fan Kuan , Streams and Mountains Travelers , Hanging Scroll , Silk Ink , C. 1000 , 206.3 x 103.3 cm. ( National Palace Museum , Taibei) Taoist mountain man , hermit , rustic , wine lover-Fan Kuan has a reputation for being truly unconventional. We know very little about this great artist , but he painted the most majestic landscape painting of the early song period. All about The Flow and Mountain Travelers , which is perhaps only the surviving work of Fan Kuan , is an orderly statement reflecting the artist's worldview. Landscape as a subject in its own right is a masterpiece of fan Kuan is an outstanding example of Chinese landscape painting. Long before Western artists considered the landscape nothing more than an installation for figures , Chinese artists erected the landscape as an object in their own right. Limited Ridges and divided into two great rivers-the yellow and Yangtze-China natural landscape was instrumental in shaping the Chinese mind and character. From the earliest time , the Chinese viewed the mountains as sacred and presented them as the abode of the immortals. The term for landscape painting (shanshui hua) in Chinese translates as mountain water painting. After a period of upheaval during the turbulent period of the five dynasties in the early 10th century (the era of political upheaval from 907-960 BC , between the fall of the Tang Dynasty and the founding of the Song Dynasty , when five dynasties quickly changed each other in the north , and more than twelve independent states were created , mainly in the south) , the hermit scholars who fled to the mountains saw the high pine as representative of the virtuous man. At the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty , which followed , from the mid-10th to the middle of the 11th century , pine and other symbolic elements were transformed into a large and impressive landscape style.
