Keeping students consistently making progress towards project goals can be a challenge. To keep students on track, it can be helpful to establish a structure that will help them plan, delegate and assess progress as they go. Facilitating a group discussion about milestones that are common to all projects, how to break up the project into actionable steps, providing a calendar to keep students accountable, and support them with tools like Gantt charts can help keep students on track. Instructors can customize milestones to meet the learning goals of their courses and the time constraints. Instructors can also introduce project management approaches and have students consider what tasks are high/low priority and high/low risk to evaluate where their effort is best spent.
Example schedule with milestones 1:
This was used in a 10-week oceanography course where student groups design and build their own oceanographic sensors/instruments. Throughout the term, students worked toward designing, building and using an underwater sensor/instrument to address a scientific question. At the beginning of the class, we discuss how to come up with a plan to implement design ideas and the necessary components. The culminating assignments are a final presentation to the class, and a technical report that documents their design process, data collection, assessment of their instrument, and suggested improvements. The structure and milestone assignments associated with the course are meant to push students to make incremental progress such that they can complete the project within the time constraints of the course.
Example schedule with milestones 2:
This was used in a semester-long course with a project to characterize a potential geologic CO2 storage site. The final products are a report that follows the expectations of an EPA application to permit a CO2 injection well and an accompanying final presentation to the class.
Project work plan:
This was used in a semester-long course with a project to characterize a potential geologic CO2 storage site. The final products are a report that follows the expectations of an EPA application to permit a CO2 injection well and an accompanying final presentation to the class. This is an outline of delegated tasks and progress to keep groups organized.
\u000f
Gantt chart:
This was used in a 10-week oceanography course where student groups design and build their own oceanographic sensors/instruments. Project leaders managed the Gantt chart, used it to help plan their project timelines and delegate tasks to group members. Below is an example of a free Gantt chart template for Excel. There are several free templates that can be shared with students here: \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://create.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/gantt-charts" \\h \u0014https://create.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/gantt-charts\u0015","cbCaiuHEdHHHLzFa","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuHEdHHHLzFa","docx",615388,"English","# Timelines and Milestones to Keep Groups on Track
## Overview
## Example Schedule with Milestones 1
## Example Schedule with Milestones 2
## Project Work Plan
## Gantt Chart","[{"question":"Why are timelines and milestones important for keeping student groups on track?","answer":"They turn goals into actionable steps and provide a structure to plan, delegate, and assess progress as the project unfolds."},{"question":"What classroom activities support milestone planning for all projects?","answer":"Facilitating discussion about common milestones, breaking the project into actionable steps, and using a calendar to maintain accountability."},{"question":"How can instructors tailor milestones to course constraints?","answer":"Milestones can be customized to match specific learning goals and the time constraints of the course."},{"question":"How are Gantt charts used in group project planning?","answer":"Project leaders manage the Gantt chart to plan timelines and delegate tasks, helping groups coordinate work and track progress."}]","Timelines and Milestones - Supporting Project Groups to Stay on Track | DOCX"]
