The discipline of project management in and of itself isnot rocket science, and therefore can typically be implemented with a relatively high degree of success. So why so many failures? The answer lies in the enablers that are required to make it work. As organizations become more aware of project management capabilities and the benefits associated with project management, greater attention is given to how to successfully implement the discipline within their culture. More and more organizations are incorporating within their environments the philosophy and associated enablers needed to make project management work for them.  \nThese enablers, or cornerstones, are essential to the implementation of a successful project management solution. In our view, there are three cornerstones which, when effectively integrated, can launch an organization to a higher level of project management capability and efficiency. The three cornerstones are:  \n• project management process and methodology  \n• project management software tools and templates  \n• project management organizational structure.  \nTo be sure, other elements contribute to the success of a project management implementation effort. However, the three cornerstones listed above represent the essential elements needed to successfully implement a project management solution within an organization.  \nPractitioners tend to overlook the importance of these three cornerstones and their integration. They generally focus on one or two without considering the third. Much like the analogy of the three-legged stool, any missing leg will cause the stool to fall over.  \nThis paper will focus on the three cornerstones essential to the successful implementation of a project management solution. More specifically, it will address the impetus by which a particular project-management solution evolved and was applied within an automotive environment. After being piloted at Company A, the project management solution is now being implemented in a variety of other automotive environments.  \nBackground  \nThe automotive industry, perhaps more than any other industry, is slow in its acceptance of change. Changes that involve new and innovative techniques and methodologies in project management are no exception. The reasons for this slow response to change are beyond the scope of this discussion. As with many other industries, however, the automotive industry has experienced pockets of success with the implementation of new project management approaches. The events and circumstances described in this paper address the implementation of a project management solution that integrates the cornerstones described above.  \nStrangely enough, the implementation of this solution evolved as a result of a reengineering effort designed to improve the efficiency of a major automotive company’s business processes. The organization (Company A) realized that several of its business processes had not kept pace with the many organizational and technological changes that had taken place over the years. Upon investigation of the company’s business processes, one of the major findings was that the processes were not documented. As with most reengineering efforts, the first step was to document the existing processes. The methodology used in this effort would ultimately lead to a major redesign of the processes to improve their effectiveness and efficiency in the company’s current business environment.  \nDuring the course of the reengineering effort, several issues beyond the scope of the project surfaced.
