\n# Introduction:A Year In Sustainability\n\nWhy fashion will be forced to confront climate change and inequality. And how thetechnology sector is aiming to support it. \nFront cover illustration by Barney lbbotson \nBy Ben HansonEditor-in-ChiefTHE INTERLINE \nTime can be pretty elastic. \nIt's very easy to sound alarmist(even though the klaxons havebeen righteously sounding for decades now)if you spotlightweather in the here and now, because weather can beunpredictable. And it's easy to come across as passive if youlook at climate in the longer term -making it feel like a distantconcern to people with more pressing ones, like the cost offood staples, political upheaval at their front door, orpersistent, institutional inequality to try and wrestle with. \nf you're a geologist examining ancient rock formations, forexample,a year doesn't mean a great deal. But if you're a trendanalyst working to document fast-moving markets, chart newchannels, spot firefly-lifespan moments and communities, orcatalogue the whims of emerging demographics, twelvemonths is an eternity. \nBut it seems like the quickening pace of change is going tosolve that problem.Because what a year means,on theplanetary calendar,is compressing in a very visible way.Andthe impacts of that compression are highly likely to become notjust observable in the abstract, but tangible in personal andprofessional ways for basically of us. \nAnd if you're a business owner or financial officer evaluatingfour quarters of up-and-down performance shaped by themacro-economic rollercoaster,a year can rush and dragdepending on how and when you slice it. \nHow we perceive the importance of a year depends heavily onour perspective. \nOver the last thirty or so years, the rate of sea level rise at theUS coastline has doubled from its long-term trend, which wasset in the century or so prior. And it appears essentially locked-in(i.e.nothing we can do will stop it)that the same sea levelsacross the United States wil rise,on average,by as much in thenext 25 years as they did in the previous 100.And an IPCCreport suggests that global sea leves could be more than ametre higher by 2100 than they are today. \nBut from an environmental sustainability point of view, there'sonly one timeline that matters-and on that timeline every yearcounts.Because if you're a progressively heating planet,or oneof the billions of people who those rising temperatures impact(either subtly,or profoundly as part of a worsening pattern)then a lot can happen in a year. \nThis elasticity of time is one of the hardest things to debatesensibly when it comes to climate change. And it's somethingI've struggled with finding the right way to talk about since TheInterline introduced our frst Sustainability Report in 2023. \nHere,we're talking about significant transformations that willoccur between 25 and 75 years from today -ll within thelifespan of people alive or being born at the moment. At apersonal level, this means we are highly likely to have to \nconfront the manifestations of climate change far sooner thanmany of us realise.A few hotter days here and there,or awetter spell than usual, will quickly spiral into persistentpatterns that could easily disrupt things we currently take forgranted. \nThe sameis set to come true at a professional level, too. \nThose sea level rises will translate into an increased risk offlooding in consumption markets across the USA,UK,andEurope, potentially changing everything from consumer buyingpower(climate disasters do not tend to be kind to thediscretionary spending part of the economy)to thepredictability and seasonality of demand. \nAnd the most pronounced risks are elsewhere in the fashionvalue chain, with sea level rises set to increase the risk offlooding for cities in Thailand,Vietnam,China and many othersourcing and production destinations. As the pandemicshowed us,any disruption to the worldwide sourcing networkcan have deep and abiding impacts on the way product showsup (or doesn't)in those aforementi","cbCaibBYollIOESm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibBYollIOESm","pdf",26160730,94,"English","# Introduction: A Year In Sustainability\n##
