The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Economic and Social Research Council or King’s College London. \nHow to cite this publication: \nThe Centre for Society and Mental Health (2021) Creating asocial science podcast: A guide for researchers. CSMH Special Publication S002 . London: ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health. \nYouth Mental Health and Covid-19 Policy Lab August 2021: Briefing Note \nBefore you start \nWhat is a podcast? \nAccording to our good friend Wikipedia, a podcast is an “episodic series of spoken word digital audio files that a user can download to a personal device for easy listening”. \nPodcasts are a powerful communication tool, which have maintained popularity over the last few years. No longer a \ntool just for media savvy producers, many academics and higher education institutions have created their own podcasts to engage wider audiences with their work. \nWhat are the benefits of creating a research-based podcast? \nCreating a podcast which effectively communicates research and it’s importance relies on skills not usually well-practiced in academia. Although challenging, developing a podcast has many benefits. Not only can such projects help researchers strengthen their confidence and communication skills, but also their ability to: \n• Identify and prioritise stakeholders \n• Engage and expand networks \n• Define objectives for public engagement and knowledge exchange activities \n• Manage projects, resources and budgets \n• Develop marketing plans \n• Monitor and evaluate impact \nMost importantly, a podcast can increase the visibility of King’s research and facilitate engagement and collaboration between our academics and wider society. \nCreating a social sciences podcast: A toolkit for researchers 3 \nSo what is this toolkit all about? \nThis is one of three guides which have been designed to show social science researchers* based at King’s College London, at any level, how they can use podcasts to disseminate their work. \nOne example we will keep returning to is Our Sick Society, a mental health podcast by the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health. This podcast was funded by the King’s Impact Acceleration Account, and was co-created by: \n• a senior academic with experience of podcasting and radio broadcasting \n• two early career researchers from the Centre \n• an expert by experience \n• a professional podcast producer \n• the Centre’s professional services team \nThe podcast project had three aims: \n• To produce content shaped by experts by experience, hearing their voices as presenters and as well as interviewees \n• Build the capacity of the early career researcher and expert by experience team members to communicate and engage stakeholders via podcasting \n• Share expertise developed throughout the project to the wider King’s community \nThis is one of three guides which have been written to address our final aimthe publication of a comprehensive toolkit to share expertise, tips and tricks for researchers interested in podcasting. The other guides cover: \n• Leading a guest podcast episode \n• Being interviewed for a podcast \n* academics in other fields may also find this toolkit helpful, but we use examples of content, stakeholders and topics drawn from social science research. \n4 Creating a social science podcast: A toolkit for researchers \nContents \nClick the images to be taken to each section. \n1: Developing your idea 6-18 \n2: Planning episodes 19-24 \n3: Equipment 25-30 \n4: Pre-Production 31-35 \n5: Production 36-47 \n6: Po","cbCaiaY8sCr5RGmB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaY8sCr5RGmB","pdf",22588532,87,"English","# Before you start\n## What is a podcast?\n## What are the benefits of creating a research-based podcast?\n# Contents\n## 1: Developing your idea\n## 2: Planning episodes\n## 3: Equipment\n## 4: Pre-Production\n## 5: Production\n## 6: Post-Production\n## 7: Going live\n## 8: Evaluating success","[{\"question\":\"What is the CSMH Podcasting Toolkit and who is it for?\",\"answer\":\"It is a guide for researchers on creating a social science podcast, with examples drawn from social science research and designed for CSMH-associated researchers at King’s College London.\"},{\"question\":\"What benefits are highlighted for creating a research-based podcast?\",\"answer\":\"The guide emphasizes improved communication and confidence, clearer objectives for public engagement and knowledge exchange, stronger networks, and the ability to manage projects, resources, and marketing plans, ultimately increasing research visibility and enabling collaboration.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the main stages covered in the toolkit?\",\"answer\":\"It provides an overview of steps from developing your idea and planning episodes through equipment, pre-production, production, post-production, going live, and evaluating success.\"}]","THE CSMH PODCASTING TOOLKIT - Creating a social science podcast: A guide for researchers | PDF",1790377146]
