The IRS uses the number to identify taxpayers who are required to file various business tax returns. Employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, nonprofit associations, trusts, estates of decedents, government agencies, certain individuals, and other business entities, use EINs. \nNote: Student organizations are NOT considered nonprofit associations. \nWhy does the student organization need one? \nEvery student organization must have an EIN in order to attain an off-campus bank account. \nHow to apply for anEIN? \n• On-line: Go to the website ([irs.gov](irs.gov)) do a search for “apply EIN online”. Follow the directions outlined on the website to apply on-line for an EIN. \n• Telephone: Go to the website ([irs.gov](irs.gov)) do a search for “Form SS-4”. Print and complete the form (Form SS-4), then call 800.829.4933. They will walk through the remaining steps in the process. \n• Mail: Go to the website ([irs.gov](irs.gov)) do a search for “Form SS-4”. Print and complete the form (Form SS-4), then mail to EIN Operation, Philadelphia, PA 19255. The IRS will send your EIN via mail within four weeks. \n• Fax: Go to the website ([irs.gov](irs.gov)) do a search for “Form SS-4”. Print and complete the form (Form SS-4), then fax it to the EIN Operation (Fax Number: (855) 641-6935) . IRS will respond with EIN within five days. \nHow to Complete Form SS-4, Application for EIN \nThe following is what a normal student organization would need to complete on the form. The other sections are not needed to complete. \nLine 1 Enter the name of the organization \nLine 2 Enter the name of the organization only if different from line 1. \nLine 3 N/A, if for banking purposes only \nLine 4a/b Enter your mailing address (normally it is 7703 Floyd Curl Dr, San Antonio TX 78229) Line 5a/b Enter only if different than mailing address \nLine 6 Bexar County, Texas \nLine 7a/b Most student organizations mark N/A \nLine 8a Most student organizations mark No \nLine 9a Other nonprofit organization, specify “Student Organization” \nLine 9b N/A \nLine 10 Check one box. Most student organizations mark “banking purpose” and specify “Open \nAccount” \nLine 11-17 N/A \nLine 18 Check “Yes” if you previously applied for an EIN. Otherwise, check “No”. \nFor questions regarding how to register for EIN number or any tax related questions, please contact the IRS at the \navailable contact information located on the [irs.gov](irs.gov) website. \nBANKING INSTITUTIONS \nA student organization may choose to open a checking or savings account at a local bank or credit union. A bank account gives the student organization the option to write checks and have instant access to account funds. Most financial institutions will require the organization to have an EIN. \nCaution should be taken ifa checking account is used. Systems should be put in place by the student organization to ensure that no member has the ability to withdraw funds from the account without approval from the student organization and/or the Advisor. Some suggestions are: have dual signers on all checks, not having a debit/credit card and not utilizing on-line banking. \nThe student organization should also determine from the outset what would happen with the funds if the organization becomes defunct. \nThe account that a student organization will open is a Business Account. When going to open the account at your chosen bank, take the following: \n• Most recent meeting minutes \n• Newsletter of organization (ask for an item that will suffice) \n• Article of Association (Constitution/By Laws should suffice) \n• EIN from IRS \n• Deposit (Amount depends on bank) \nPlease contact Analisa Davila ([davilaa6@uthscsa.edu](davilaa6@uthscsa.edu)) in the Office of Student Life with any questions you may have.","cbCaiaF1jcB3Okjv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaF1jcB3Okjv","pdf",115879,"English","# EIN for Student Organizations\n## What an EIN is and why it’s needed\n## How to apply for an EIN (online, phone, mail, fax)\n## How to complete Form SS-4\n## Banking institutions and account setup","[{\"question\":\"What is an EIN and how is it used?\",\"answer\":\"An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS in the format 00-0000000.
