All too often those great, well thought out plans stumble during execution because they were poorly understood or poorly communicated downstream. Who takes the blame for that? You do. Here's how to save time, save money, and save frustration: If you understand where your company is headed and how they want to get there (i.e. , their strategic plan) then identifying how to support it is much easier. This class gives technology managers, like you, a basic set of tools for developing strategic plans for their teams that align with and support the overall goals of the firm. And, hopefully along with that, you can show the folks up the ladder that you understand the bigger picture and your role in it. \nLearning Objectives \nAt the end of this class, you will be able to: \n􀁸 Describe what a strategic plan includes \n􀁸 Identify your company's strategic plan \n􀁸 Develop a plan for your team that aligns with the company's \n􀁸 Communicate your plan to those who matter \nAbout the Speaker \nPaul is the Director of Technology for HC Yu and Associates, Consulting Engineers in Richmond, Virginia. He is responsible for developing and executing the firm's strategies for all things related to technology. Improving production, staying ahead of industry trends, and training are all part of the job as well. Paul has over 19 years of experience applying Autodesk® products to a variety of industries, including technical theater, industrial design, exhibit design, architecture, and MEP engineering. He was recently awarded his MS in the Management of Information Technology from UVa’s McIntire School of Commerce. In addition to the day job, he also provides technology consulting to small businesses and non-profit organizations. \n[pkirill@kdcad.com](pkirill@kdcad.com) \nStrategic Planning for the CAD/BIM Manager \nIntroduction \nThe idea for this class came to me after a series of conversations I had with several mid-level management types. These people varied widely in experience, level of responsibility, and duties. Some worked together at the same company, but in different areas or locations; most were from different companies. The thing they did have in common was none of them had any idea what their company's strategic plan might be. In the hierarchy of things they were somewhere in the middle (or lower) and not included in those kinds of discussions. However, they all agreed that understanding the plan could help them better identify their place in it and possibly make them better at their job. \nEntire libraries and MBA programs have been dedicated to the topic of Strategic Planning. My hope is to offer you an introduction and foundation on the topic. With that, maybe you can better understand your place in the grand scheme of things and be a little better at your job. \nWhat's in a Strategic Plan? \nA Strategic Plan is a roadmap to success; complete with destinations, directions, expectations, and points of interest along the way. As long as you have one, your company is on the road to greatness. Getting a plan is easy-you can download them from the internet... No, not really. \nOutput of Strategic Planning \nStrategic Planning is not a session, a meeting, or a weekend retreat. It is a disciplined process of evaluating and determining the best course of action a company should take in order to be successful given current and future circumstances. The product of that process is the Strategic Plan. Where there is a process there are methodologies-and those you can find on the internet. A fast look at Wikipedia lists several: \n􀁸 SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) \n􀁸 Balanced Scorecard \n􀁸 Scenario Planning \n􀁸 PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological) Analysis \n􀁸 ATM","cbCaihgtlT4Ey8Ev","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihgtlT4Ey8Ev","pdf",199833,"English","# Learning Objectives\n## Describe what a strategic plan includes\n## Identify the company’s strategic plan\n## Develop and align a team plan\n## Communicate the plan to stakeholders\n# Introduction\n## Why mid-level managers need strategic plan clarity\n# What's in a Strategic Plan?\n## Strategic plan as a roadmap to success\n# Output of Strategic Planning\n## Strategic planning as a disciplined process\n# Methodologies and Frameworks\n## SWOT, Balanced Scorecard, Scenario Planning, PEST, ATM-RCA\n## Other approaches: GTSM, Issue-Based, Real-Time Planning\n# Components of a Strategic Plan\n## Vision, Mission, Values (VMV)","[{\"question\":\"Why do strategic plans often fail during execution?\",\"answer\":\"Plans can stumble when downstream teams misunderstand them or receive poor communication.
