Harris ( February 5 , 1937 – April 14 , 2019) was Professor of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University , Sacramento. He served there for ten years as department president and was named Woodrow Wilson Fellow. He received his Master's and Doctor's degrees from Cornell University. [1] Harris is a member of the American Academy of Religions , a member at the Westar Institute , a member of the controversial Jesus Workshop , and the author of several books on religion , some of which are used in introductory college courses. He was also very interested in a number of geological topics. Harris grew up in western Washington state , where views of Mount Rainier were inspired by what has become a lifelong concern over the potential eruption of volcanoes in the Cascades.
