However, this approach often leads to unanswered questions and, potentially, feelings of betrayal when expectations for future gifts are left unmet. There are several planning tools, including a Statement of Wealth Transfer Intent (SOWTI), that can facilitate a more harmonious and purposeful transfer of both wealth and, importantly, family values. In the following workbook, we go into detail on developing your own SOWTI. Learn more about other Tools to Transfer Values with Wealth. \nSuccessful multigenerational families construct technically sound estate plans while nurturing strong communication critical to maintaining family harmony. There are communication tools that you can use that all center on values and the “why” behind decisions on wealth transfer planning. \nSTAT EMENT OF WEALT H T RANSFERINT ENT OR L ETT ER OF WISHES? \nWhile SOWTIs are written to the beneficiaries and included in a trust document, grantors often will combine a SOWTI with a letter of wishes, which may be written to the trustee, beneficiaries or both. Letters of wishes are not typically included in the trust instrument but are usually written at the sametime a trust is created. A letter of wishes can provide context and guidance to the trustee when they are making decisions for your family and gives the trustee insights into how you would like your wealth to be managed for your beneficiaries. It can also provide guidance on the trustee’s ability to address changes in circumstances, which are likely in the case of any long-term trust. \nBelow are guidelines for consideration when preparing your own SOWTI or letter of wishes. These statements are intended to complement your estate planning documents but are not legally binding and do not override the specific terms of your trusts. They allow you to expand on how your own values and life experiences have informed your plan. \nWhether you and your attorney ultimately choose to include a formal SOWTI within your trust documents or to provide your trustee or beneficiaries with a letter of wishes, working through this exercise can help you articulate your own intentions and express them to your family to manage expectations and set them up for future success. \nTH E B E N E F ITS O F \nHAVI NG A SO WT I \n0102 \n03 \nImprove the likelihood your wealth plan will be carried out as you intend \nAvoid future misunderstandings and promote family harmony \nPreserve your voice and articulate your family’s purpose for current and future generations \nWHERE TO START \nBefore considering the specific goals and activities you wish to support, or defining the lifestyle you want for your family, it is important to reflect on your underlying philosophy regarding the role wealth plays in your life by considering the following series of questions. Reflecting on these themes will enable you to articulate the vision for your wealth with children, grandchildren and future generations. It also will allow you to share insight into how your wealth was created and the lessons you learned along the way. Ideally, both SOWTIs and Letters of Wishes are the capstone to ongoing conversations that have occurred with your beneficiaries and trustee during your lifetime. \nYOUR STORY \n» How was your wealth created and/or how have you served as a steward of the wealth you inherited? \n» What has been the impact of wealth (or scarcity) in your life and what are your expectations for how your wealth will be managed as a result? \n» What setbacks did you experience and what lessons did you learn? \n» ","cbCaiskXIkeWTMkI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiskXIkeWTMkI","pdf",2820636,"English","# Statement of Wealth Transfer Intent or Letter of Wishes?\n## Benefits of Having a SOWTI\n## Where to Start\n## Your Story\n## How Others Have Answered These Questions","[{\"question\":\"What is a Statement of Wealth Transfer Intent (SOWTI), and who is it written for?\",\"answer\":\"A SOWTI is written to the beneficiaries and included in a trust document to clarify the grantor’s intent.\"},{\"question\":\"How does a letter of wishes relate to a SOWTI and the trust?\",\"answer\":\"Grantors often combine a SOWTI with a letter of wishes that may be written to the trustee, beneficiaries, or both, providing context and guidance when decisions are made over time.\"},{\"question\":\"What benefits does having a SOWTI provide to a family?\",\"answer\":\"A SOWTI helps increase the likelihood the wealth plan is carried out as intended, avoid misunderstandings, promote family harmony, and preserve the grantor’s voice across current and future generations.\"}]","Statement of Wealth Transfer Intent (SOWTI) or Letter of Wishes | PDF",1789494949]
