You are welcome to contact the Advancement Project National Office at [PoliceFreeSchools@advancementproject.org](PoliceFreeSchools@advancementproject.org) to request more support before preparing your complaint. If you are seeking legal advice or want to file a lawsuit in court, you should contact a local attorney before preparing your complaint. \nWhen can I file an internal complaint against a school resource officer? \nComplaints can be filed for many reasons, including: \n• Use of force (such as pushing, tackling, use of pepper spray or taser, punching, chokeholds, etc.) \n• Harassment \n• Discrimination \n• Retaliation \n• Violation of school policy \n• Insulting, demeaning, or humiliating treatment \n• Any other inappropriate or harmful behavior \nWho can file an internal complaint against a school resource officer or other school staff? \nGenerally, the following people can submit a complaint: \n• A parent/guardian of the student harmed \n• The student harmed \n• A teacher or other school staff member who witnessed the incident \n• Other students who witnessed the incident and/or their parents/guardians \n• An organization supporting the student harmed \nWhat steps can I take to prepare my internal complaint? \n1. Find out if your school district or police department has a complaint form. \nYou can search the internet or contact your local school district or police department to find out if they have a complaint form for school resource officers. For example, if the school resource officer is a member of the police department, the local police department may have an online complaint form that you can use. The school district or state department of education may also have a complaint form. \nIf your school district or police department has a complaint form, you should submit the form as soon as you are able. Be sure to check for any deadlines or other local requirements (for example, you may have to file a complaint within a certain amount of time from when the issue occurred) . \nTOOLKIT: \nFILING A COMPLAINT AGAINST A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER \n3. The letter should be sent to the school board, superintendent, school principal, and the police chief. This toolkit includes a “Complaint Letter Template” to help you write your letter. Be sure to update anything in this template that is written inside of brackets. \nYou should send your complaint letter as soon as you are able. \n4.
