The course aims at further developing students’ language skills through an advanced acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge that will reinforce their understanding of diverse life experiences and facilitate fluent, appropriate, and culturally nuanced language interpretation and use.\nThis course provides students with an opportunity to explore the grammar of the Spanish language more deeply and introduces them to four types of writing: description, narration, exposition and argumentation. Student work will include grammar exercises, quizzes, in-class writing and essays to be written at home.\nNative-speaking students or those who have acquired proficiency through extended residence (e.g. native speakers, military service, religious service over an extended period) are ineligible to take this class.\nLearning Outcomes\nUpon successful completion of the course, students will:\nDemonstrate an ACTFL Advanced Low level of proficiency to communicate in various target language contexts. In particular, writing will be emphasized. (ACTFL Advanced Low is roughly equivalent to the CEFR B1.2)\nDemonstrate understanding of major authentic cultural products, practices, and perspectives of the target non-US culture and the diversity of cultural perspectives within the target culture.\nExhibit the skills of effective teamwork and communication behaviors and attitudes working together in pairs and groups on a variety of course activities and projects.\nDemonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of Spanish grammatical structures and syntax.\nBe able to share their ideas more readily through writing in Spanish.\nBe able to write essays with a clear introduction, body and conclusion, and incorporate transitions and transitional phrases and sentences effectively.\nBe able to write in four primary styles of writing: description, narration, exposition and argumentation.\nContribute constructive feedback to other students’ written work.\nExperience writing as a process that includes prewriting, drafting and revision.\nWrite with attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling.\nThink critically through and about their writing.\nImprove their reading skills in Spanish to become a better writer.\nEngage intellectually with the Latin American and Spanish cultural content of the readings.\nBaccalaureate Degree Requirement\nThis course is part of the General Education Core curriculum.
