They should not be seen as prescriptive settings that are locked down-other photographers may use different settings to achieve the same outcome. Click on the Movie link to see why I have chosen my settings. My Starting Settings will most likely be changed after I have started shooting-this may be influenced by changing lighting or creative decisions.
Shutter Priority is a viable alternative to shooting Sports/Action. Note that the Landscape settings change if the camera is on a tripod (auto ISO becomes a fixed ISO value) . Uncompressed RAW is only really necessary for Landscape shooting but Uncompressed files can have lossless compression when imported as DNG files in Lightroom. Setting a fixed White Balance setting is only really critical for JPEGs and Movies but some photographers may prefer to set this incamera rather than in post. | Portrait
Single Head & Shoulder | Action
Freeze / Pan with Blur | Landscape
Wide-Angle : Hand-Held | Landscape
Wide Angle : Tripod | Street (Full Frame)
Sunny 16 | Movie (hand-held) |
| | MEMORY 1
These settings are for tight 'head and shoulder' portraits that will provide good figure/ground separation. For group portraits the photographer would typically be expected to stop down to f/8 or f/11 . These settings are, however, appropriate for isolating objects (detail shots) as well as for portraits. Eye-AF is the primary focus method with DMF as the backup or'Plan B'. Although the Aperture is listed as f/4 I will invariably open up to f/1 .8 when using a wide aperture prime when only the leading eye needs to be crtically sharp.
Click on the Movie link below to see why I have chosen these settings. | MEMORY 2
The Focus Area may need to be changed to Expand Flexible Spot or one of the Lockon AF options depending on the subject and its surrounds. For panning shots where a slower shutter speed is required it may be necessary to stop the aperture down to f/8 and change the Auto ISO Min SS to 1/250sec. F/11 can be used on the A7III and A9 cameras. Recall Custom Hold 2 is used to overide Continuous AF and Continuous Shooting in order to capture a subject that is static. Shutter Priority is a viable alternative to shooting Sports/Action compared to Aperture priority with ISO Auto Min. SS. The aperture should not be smaller than f/8 when using an A7RIII.
Click on the Movie link below to see why I have chosen these settings. | MEMORY 3
Landscapes can be captured with any focal length lens but these settings are for wide-angle and ultra wide-angle lenses. The shutter speed will be slow in low ambient light so the photographer must hold the camera steady when pressing the shutter release. Switching the Drive Mode to a 2-Second Timer in low light may help. Auto ISO is slected rather than 100 ISO for hand-held Landscape to avoid camerashake when using smaller apertures in low ambient light. Owners of APS-C cameras should open up to f/8 to avoid the effects of diffraction. | M1 (Installed from Card Slot 2) These settings assume the camera is mounted on a tripod and the exposure may be longer than 1/8 second in low ambient light. Shadows may appear much darker in the Raw editing software as DRO is NOT applied to the Raw file. Expose for the highlights and process for the shadows (review a test exposure to ensure the highlights are not overexposed) . A remote release will be be needed for exposure times over 30 seconds and Long Exposure Noise Reduction switched on.
Click on the Movie link below to see why I have chosen these settings. | M2 (Installed from Card Slot 2) Exposure is being set to the brightness of the sunny weather. It will protect light tones in full sun.
