It defines how requirements are translated into software components, interfaces, and data needed for implementation, describing both preliminary architecture and detailed design stages. The template guides teams to produce clear references for code development, including introduction, system overview, architecture, data design, component and human interface design, and supporting materials such as matrices and appendices.","Software Design Document (SWDD) Template
Note: This is only an example and has not been reviewed by LANL to ensure it is truly IEEE 1016 or Ch. 21 compliant.
Background
Software design is a process by which the software requirements are translated into a representation of software components, interfaces, and data necessary for the implementation phase. The SWDD shows how the software system will be structured to satisfy the requirements. It is the primary reference for code development and, therefore, it must contain all the information required by a programmer to write code. The SWDD is performed in two stages. The first is a preliminary design in which the overall system architecture and data architecture is defined. In the second stage—i.e., the detailed design stage—more detailed data structures are defined and algorithms are developed for the defined architecture.
This template is an annotated outline for a software design document adapted from the IEEE Recommended Practice for Software Design Descriptions. The IEEE Recommended Practice for Software Design Descriptions have been reduced in order to simplify this assignment while still retaining the main components and providing a general idea of a project definition report. For your own information, please refer to IEEE Std 1016 for the full IEEE Recommended Practice for Software Design Descriptions.
SWDD- [obtain number from Conduct of Engineering Document Numbering \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://coe.lanl.gov/APs/DocNum/SitePages/Home.aspx" \u0014SharePoint site\u0015]
(Team Name)
(Project Title)
Software Design Document
Name (s): Lab Section: Workstation:
Date: (mm/dd/yyyy)
TABLE OF CONTENTS
\u0013 TOC \\o "1-2" \\u \u00141.0 INTRODUCTION \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797467 \\h \u00144\u0015
1.1 Purpose \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797468 \\h \u00144\u0015
1.2 Scope \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797469 \\h \u00144\u0015
1.3 Overview \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797470 \\h \u00144\u0015
1.4 Reference Material \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797471 \\h \u00144\u0015
1.5 Definitions and Acronyms \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797472 \\h \u00144\u0015
2.0 SYSTEM OVERVIEW \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797473 \\h \u00144\u0015
3.0 SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797474 \\h \u00144\u0015
3.1 Architectural Design \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797475 \\h \u00144\u0015
3.2 Decomposition Description \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797476 \\h \u00145\u0015
3.3 Design Rationale \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797477 \\h \u00145\u0015
4.0 DATA DESIGN \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797478 \\h \u00145\u0015
4.1 Data Description \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797479 \\h \u00145\u0015
4.2 Data Dictionary \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797480 \\h \u00145\u0015
5.0 COMPONENT DESIGN \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797481 \\h \u00145\u0015
6.0 HUMAN INTERFACE DESIGN \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797482 \\h \u00145\u0015
6.1 Overview of User Interface \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797483 \\h \u00145\u0015
6.2 Screen Images \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797484 \\h \u00146\u0015
6.3 Screen Objects and Actions \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797485 \\h \u00146\u0015
7.0 REQUIREMENTS MATRIX \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797486 \\h \u00146\u0015
8.0 APPENDICES \u0013 PAGEREF _Toc522797487 \\h \u00146\u0015
\u0015\u000f
INTRODUCTION
Purpose
Identify the purpose of this SWDD and its intended audience.
