Intensity Measurement\n\nJack ChampaigneElectronics Incorporated/The Shot Peener \n[Excerpts from U.S.Patent 2,350,440by J.O.Almen on Shot Blasting Test] \ns is well known, cold working by shotblasting improvesfatigue durability of ma-chine parts. Its effectiveness dependsupon producing a thin surface layer stressed incompression by the peening action of the shot.Thispeening action varies with the velocity of the shot, with the size of the shot, and with the number of shotdirected at the work.To assure that the operation willbe properly performed,it is desirable to be able in asimple and inexpensive mannerto measure intensityof shot blasting.Likewise it is necessary that manu-facturing standardsbesetand that engineering speci-fication show the extent of shot blasting required fora given piece of work.To meet these demands thepresent invention has for its object the provision ofinstrumentation and a plan for use whereby theeffectiveness of shot blasting can be easily andquickly measured. \nWhen the effectiveness or intensity of a shot blastoperation is to be determined, whether for initiallysetting standards or for checking to meet givenspecifications,it is here proposed to submit to theshot blast one face only of a thin flat steel plate andthen gage the radius of curvature of the shot blastedspecimen.Prior to the test the opposite faces of theflat blade have surface layers substantially free fromunequal stress.Compacting or peening the surfaceonone side only created an unbalance which causesthe initially flat plate to bow.The extent of bowing isdependent upon the degree of compressive stressand there is a measure of the intensity of the shotblasting operation.Gaging the height of the arcbetween predetermined points indicates the radiusof curvature of the test specimen and reflects theresult of the peening action. After the procedure isaccurately charted, tests may be made quickly andwithout the exercise of special skill. \n[Excerpts from SAE document J442]The controlof apeening machine operation is prima-rily a matter of the control of the properties of a blast \n1992082 \nof shot in its relation to the work being peened.Thebasis of measurement of these properties is as follows:If a flat piece of steel is clamped to a solid block andexposed to a blast of shot,it will be curved uponremoval from the block. The curvature will be convexon the peened side. The extent of this curvature on astandard sample serves as a means of measurementof theblast. The degreeof curvature depends upon theproperties of the blast, the properties of the test strip, and the nature of exposure to the blast,as describedbelow.Properties of the: \n\n| Blast | Exposure | Test Strip |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Velocity |
