Leaders will “model” how to tell a story that is focused on what makes them diverse. To do this, we recommend preparing your story in advance.\nStart by reviewing the D&I wheel (Slide 2) and select as many life categories that you can find details to share about. Be specific in your sharing and if possible, connect how that diverse detail about you might be helpful to the work we do as an organization. For example, explain how your experience growing up in the city and “social status” that you did might be helpful to the work we do in blood collection in that area. Use the PPT template (Slide 3) to put a visual together as you present your story to the team. Use the example (Slide 4) if you need further guidance, but don’t forget to remove it later.\nMake the point that all sorts of things (well beyond color and gender) make us all diverse. To create an inclusive environment for our clients, partners and each other we must first be able to recognize things that make us different from one another. In doing so, we begin to recognize that all of us are in fact included in this discussion about diversity. Not only are we included in the discussion, we all share responsibility in making the place we work an inclusive environment.\nThe main exercise – instructions:\n(Leader will partner people up before the exercise.)\nWith your partner, take 5 minutes each to introduce yourself to one another.\nInclude at least 3 specific things that make you diverse.\n(Be prepared to introduce your partner to the room.)\nDesired Outcome:\nRed Crossers will begin sharing in the responsibility of creating an environment that is culturally competent, specifically one where there is thoughtfulness if cross cultural interaction.\nDiversity & Inclusion Wheel\nINSERT\nIMAGE\nHERE\nWhat makes me diverse?\nInsert point here\nInsert point here\nInsert point here\nInsert point here\nAnd so on … as needed.\nWhat makes me diverse?\nBorn and raised in Wisconsin\nIntrovert\nFirst-Generation College Student\nThinking Style – I love lists!\nCis-gender Female – she/her/hers\nSpeak 2 Languages Fluently – English and Russian\nEXAMPLE","cbCaikf7OL4ONsRw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikf7OL4ONsRw","pptx",1734900,"English","# Purpose and Objectives\n# How to Lead the Exercise\n## Review the D&I wheel\n## Prepare the story and PPT\n# Main Exercise - Instructions\n## Partnering and introductions\n## Story content requirements\n# Desired Outcome\n# Diversity & Inclusion Wheel - Prompts","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the “Sharing My Story” Diversity and Inclusion exercise?\",\"answer\":\"It offers a structured way for Red Crossers to learn about one another and practice discussing what makes them diverse through storytelling.\"},{\"question\":\"How should the team leader prepare and run the exercise?\",\"answer\":\"The leader should model a diversity-focused story, prepare the story in advance, review the D\\u0026I wheel, and assemble a visual using the PPT template and example guidance if needed.\"},{\"question\":\"What should participants include when sharing their story with a partner?\",\"answer\":\"Each person shares for 5 minutes, introduces themselves, and includes at least three specific things that make them diverse, with readiness to introduce their partner to the room.\"}]","Sharing My Story - Diversity and Inclusion Exercise Instructions | PPTX"]
