Goals help us stay motivated, focused and organized. Goal setting also helps decrease stress, helps us perform better, and feel more engaged in our learning.
You will need to set goals at different times throughout your learning career and in different areas. You may set ongoing goals related to your overall university experience or goals related to your academic standing. You will also need to set project and course specific goals, and even in group/team settings.
SMART Goals is a popular goal setting framework commonly used in many different settings, including university. The acronym SMART stands for:
Specific—For a goal to be specific, it must be carefully defined. The goal of getting a good job when you graduate is too general. It doesn’t define what a good job is. A more specific goal would be something like, “identify a hospital that recruits graduate nurses and has clear career paths”.
Measurable—To show effect, and report progress, goals need to be measured. What this means is that your goal should have clearly defined outcomes with enough detail to measure and track them. For example, setting a goal of doing well at university is vague and undefined, but making a goal of graduating with a specific grade point average (GPA) or placement experience, is measurable and something you can work with and track.
Attainable—Creating attainable or achievable goals means they are reasonable and within your ability to accomplish. If you plan to work full time during your studies, making it your goal to take on a full course load may be challenging and hard to attain, for example. But, it’s important to note that setting attainable or achievable goals does not mean you should set low, unchallenging goals!
Relevant—In goal setting, relevant means that the goal applies to the situation you are in. In relation to university, your goals should be oriented around your experience as a student.
Time-based or, Time-bound—Having time-based goals means that you set a specific time frame to achieve your goal. So, instead of “I will get my paper written sometime soon” your goal should be more specific, like “I will get my paper written by Wednesday night”. By doing so, you know when you must meet the goal by. This will also help you with time management and strategizing for how you will accomplish the goal as well.
Frameworks like this can help you approach your goal setting in an organized and purposeful manner so that you can create goals that will stick. While you can apply this framework to your goals, you can also use it to develop objectives (ex. the tasks you will complete or steps you will take to get to your goals), and breakdown larger and ongoing goals into smaller SMART goals.
Source: \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SMART-goals.png" \\h \u0014https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SMART-goals.png\u0015, Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)
Activity: Check your learning
\u000f
Activity: Examples of goals that do and do not follow the SMART system
Below are examples of goals that do and do not follow the SMART system.
