Johnston, Holly R. Pharoah \nDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, Dalhousie University \n[clifton.johnston@dal.ca](clifton.johnston@dal.ca) \nAbstract – Timesheets have been used in a capstone course to provide students with a framework for tracking contributions to team projects and allow instructors insight into activities students self-report undertaking throughout a 26-week project. The purpose of this work is to evaluate these timesheets and to investigate the correlations of the types of activities and time reported with project outcomes to determine if there are any factors in the data that are predictive of a successful project. \nWeekly timesheets were submitted in an Excel file, wherein students could choose from a pre-determined list of activities and input the corresponding time. All data was analyzed to identify correlations. The final report, final presentation, and average team logbook grades were evaluated with respect to activities and time. A weak correlation was found between time spent on the project and student grades. We are continuing to analyze more timesheet data to identify additional connections. \nKeywords: capstone design, mechanical engineering, design thinking, team management, assessment tools. \n1. INTRODUCTION \nTimesheets provide a useful tool for monitoring student project activities, not only for the students themselves, but for their teams and their instructors. Weekly timesheets were originally implemented in a mechanical engineering capstone course to provide instructors with a tool to identify and then address the issue of unequal contributions by team members. \nTimesheets are a common tool used in many industrial settings. They are also a tool that can be helpful in tracking project tasks completed as feedback for project management and team accountability in capstone design courses [1, 2] . The initial idea for introducing timesheets to the mechanical engineering capstone course was sparked by reviewing the approach taken in mechanical engineering at MIT [3] . Their course used a custom online timesheet tracking system. Our approach, while inspired by this approach, used a simple Excel spreadsheet. \nCapstone teams completed and submitted a timesheet where each team member identified tasks they completed and the time spent on each task in the previous week. Students could only select tasks from a pre-defined list. Students continually updated their weekly tasks so that, by the end of the course, students would have a 26-week compilation of the work they had completed on their project. The timesheets were reviewed and feedback was provided to the students on the types and quantity of occurrence of tasks. In exceptional cases, the timesheets have been used to adjust grades for students who have not contributed to the team project. \nUnfortunately, the instructors have not had the opportunity to analyze the timesheet data, nor to consider if there are any broader conclusions that can be drawn. Our initial curiousity stemmed from whether the overall selfreported time spent on a capstone project correlated to good project outcomes. Data reported here was for one year of timesheet entries. \n2. METHODS OF ANALYSIS \nA literature review was initially conducted in order to establish effective approaches for evaluating timesheet data. McIntosh explored the use of stakeholder mapping asa tool to support student incorporation of stakeholder needs in a senior undergraduate mechanical engineering capstone course, noting that we need to teach students to be problem definers as well as problem solvers and that we need to better prepare students for the social aspects of engineering problems [4] . She expressed that the convergent design process misses the mark when it comes to problem ","cbCaiseAbZSF0MvT","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiseAbZSF0MvT","pdf",1862228,"English","# RETROSPECTIVE EVALUATION OF CAPSTONE PROJECT - Timesheet Data\n## Abstract\n## Keywords\n## 1.
