However, unlike traditional persuasive essays where the writer takes a serious tone and talks about the true merits of his/her point of view, satirical essays are written sarcastically in order to mock and point out flaws in the opposing point of view. \nIn a famous example,“Letter to a Royal Academy,” Ben Franklin jokingly suggests that scientists spend their time trying to find a way to make the smell of flatulence appealing. He does this to criticize scientists for wasting time on frivolous issues and ignoring more pressing ones. \nFor this assignment, you are going to write your own satirical essay. Remember that while satire is supposed to be funny, its main point is not simply to crack jokes. Rather, a well-crafted satirical essay criticizes some aspect of society through the use of humor. If your satirical essay isn’t trying to persuade people to convert to your point of view, then it isn’t truly a satirical essay. \nMost satirical essays do one of two things: \n1. “Spin”a societal problem or issue so it sounds like a good thing. \n2. Pose a ridiculous solution to a problem. \nIn doing either of these things, the author is highlighting the severity of the problem, while at the sametime, mocking individuals in the society who choose to ignore the problem or who want to solve it in away the author disagrees with. \nNOTE: All writing must be typed (Times New-Roman, 12 Pt) and double-spaced. If you have questions about how to do this, please ask. \nThe Paper: \nYour satirical essay must be a minimum of two and a maximum of three pages long. Due to the relatively informal nature of the assignment, first-person pronouns can be used. \nYou may write about any topic you choose. The following should spark some ideas: \nSocial Issues: \nSocial issues like education, social class, the economy, abortion or poverty can also be a good starting point for a satirical essay. For example, if you want to convince your reader that gay marriage should be outlawed, you could write sarcastically from the perspective of someone who wants to allow anyone to marry any person, animal or inanimate object they like. A satirical essay arguing for gay marriage might mockingly suggest that all marriage be outlawed due to the extremely high rates of divorce among traditional, heterosexual couples. \nCurrent Events: \nCurrent events also provide good fodder for satirical essays, like those about celebrity scandals, local news and world events. For example, if your football team loses a game, you could write a satirical \nessay to mock fair-weather fans and argue that people should stand by their team, even in tough times. You could accomplish this by sarcastically arguing that the team should be thrown out of town permanently, while pointing out that you loved them just last week. \nPolitics: \n‘Nuff said!! \nOther Topics: \nAny topic that you are passionate about can be a good one for a satirical essay. The main keys are to remember that satire is intended to be humorous while making a point. Any issue that can be debated can be tackled in a satirical essay. Some other topics to consider are immigration reform, free speech rights, taxes, gun control, whether tobacco and alcohol should be legal, television content, etc. \nMake sure… \n1) Make sure you use irony-language that means the mocking opposite of what it says. Thus, you will be using indirection so that instead of directly attacking your subject, you will expose its weaknesses in an amusingly indirect manner. \n2) Beware of direct sarcastic attack. Sarcastic name-calling loses the sense of control that the satirist strives for. Therefore, AVOID SARCASM-the blatant contradiction of one statement by another: \"I like your letter so much, I think I'll use it as toilet paper!\" or \"This food is so delicious, I only vomited 5 times whe","cbCaibbMJwhSbGXo","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibbMJwhSbGXo","pdf",75326,"English","# Satire overview\n## Definition and purpose\n## Two main approaches\n# Assignment requirements\n## Formatting and length\n## Planning topics\n## Guidance on writing satire\n# Required deliverables","[{\"question\":\"What distinguishes a satirical essay from a traditional persuasive essay?\",\"answer\":\"A satirical essay uses sarcasm and humor to mock flaws in an opposing point of view, rather than presenting a serious tone about the writer’s direct merits.\"},{\"question\":\"What two methods do most satirical essays use?\",\"answer\":\"They either spin a societal problem so it sounds good, or pose a ridiculous solution to a problem to highlight its severity and the folly of those who ignore it.\"},{\"question\":\"What writing techniques are recommended to avoid ineffective sarcasm?\",\"answer\":\"Use irony-language that mocks the opposite of what it says, avoid direct sarcastic name-calling, and provide clues so readers don’t misinterpret the satire at face value.\"}]","Responding to Society with Satire - Satirical essay assignment | PDF",1790086901]
