Introduction\n\npressure on sites/labs consolidation, space alsobecomes a constraint,i.e.,space for instrumen-tation,flows,etc.Despite the importance of theabove, the modeling capabilities in the lab arevery limited or non-existent.Often budgets arebased on the senior manager's experience,esti-mates,using a factor oflet’s say 10%more thanlast year and occasionally the use of MS Excel, but not based on verified data driven models. This article is focused on the methodology andapproach to build resources modeling,includ-ing both analysts and instruments in the QClabs. The proven approach and methodology forlaboratories modeling described in this articleis based on a resource planning and schedul-ing software solution(Smart-QC).This articlecontains examples of actual case studies andprojects that have been successfully completedby one of the top three pharmaceutical, biotech, and generic companies thathaveembraced thismethodology fortheirQClaboratories planningand scheduling. One of the key reasons whyQC laboratories do not have advanced model-ing tools is the complexity in both standardsdevelopment andtranslation ofthe commercialand especially non-commercial forecast into \nvery year when budget time comes, thepressure rises to cut costs, cut spending, and reduce staff;however, improvementsin serviceleveland throughput continueto be expected.Lean and Six Sigma in somecasesfallshortwhen it comesto QClabs mainlydue to its complexity. The savings in packagingandmanufacturing could notbematchedby thequality operation which increases the pressureeven further.Thelargest singleexpenseitem inthe QC lab is labor(analysts/chemists),whichare relatively high paid positions;therefore, itwould bebeneficialto use an advancedresourcemodeling tool to more accurately project theexpected number of people needed in the QClab to support the business based on a givenforecast.Without the proper modeling tool, thelab could end upwith either too many analysts, leading to cost increase or too few that leadsto an increase in overtime, resulting in highercosts and additional stress.Scheduling for QClabs can be quite complex;both standards de-velopment and translation of the commercialand especially non-commercial forecast intoQC samples.Furthermore, with the increased \nQC demands. This \nFigure 1.Managing labsoperation:strategic leveland daily perform andsupervise the manufacture, processing, packing,or holdingof each drug product.”This is applied to QC as well as otherparts of the organization. For example,if the required QCresources are underestimated and significant pressure isapplied on the QC personnel to get a timely release;that canlead to excessive overtime, which then leads to increase instress level and eventually can result in human errors and amajor compliance risk.1 \n## Resource Planning:Instrument and Analystin QC Laboratories\n\nQC resource modelingis one ofthree majorstepsin managinglab operations. As can be seen in Figure 1,Step 1is resourceplanning(the main focus of this article),which allows a com-pany to determine if there are sufficient resources for bothanalysts andequipmenttomeet customer/business demands. There may beshortterm gaps that could be managedvia overtime, temporary work force, outsidelab
