influences which fow from acquaintancewith the history of great men's lives are pow-erful and abiding.Religious biographical liter-ature is greatly appreciated by Christians of everyname;nor can the general estimation in which itis held be deemed erroneous.It would be diff-cult to indicate any means,separate from its issuesof the inspired volume,hy which the press hasdone more efficient service in quickening spirituallife and promoting Christian usefulness.No manhas fulfilled his course in latter times with whoselife it could be more profitable for the churches ofChrist to have a familiar knowledge,than that ofthe illustrious subject of these pages.Persuadedthat such is the case,it seems an imperative dutyto promote so worthy a service.This has beenrecognized by several eminent ministers,and inconsequence various works have been published.Several years since,the Rev.Dr.Dowling issued  \na“Judson Offering,”which has placed incidentsof great interest before some thousands,and,it isto be hoped,with beneficial results in nurturing amissionary spirit.Since Mr.Judson's lamenteddecease,not only the commemorative discoursesof the Rev.Drs.Hague and Babcock,but variousother small works,have appeared.The Rev.Messrs.Eddy of Lowell,Gray of Shelburne Falls,and Gillette now of New York,have preparedinteresting sketches;and at the time of ourpresent writing,a small work by the Rev.Dr.Cushman is issuing from the press.  \nIn addition to these,the Rev.Dr.Wayland hasgathered together the journals and correspond-ence of Mr.Judson in two volumes,and presenteda memoir which will doubtless long be regardedas an important contribution to the literature ofmissions.  \nSatisfied that there is a class of readers whowill not be contented with the scanty informationwhich the smaller works contain,while the largerone is beyond the means of very many,at a timewhen there was no intimation of any work of asimilar scope,the one now presented was pro-jected,and its preparation commenced.  \nIn writing it,the author had no theories of hisown to support.His object from first to last was  \nto make a work answerable to his title-page.Asfar as possible,he has incorporated Mr.Judson'sown language.When contemplating this work,he chanced to read a review of the memoirof a missionary,published some years before,which remarked that while“ample use”is madeof the writings of the worthy laborer it com-memorates,“they are not,in the manner of somebiographers,dragged in wholesale,as if eagerlygrasped to fill up a page.Indeed,seldom is theremore than a portion of a letter quoted.”  \nThese remarks will be found to apply to thepresent volume.To secure accuracy and com-pleteness,much more time was occupied thanwas at first anticipated.Eminent ministers whohave manifested a kind interest in its preparationhave examined the proof sheets.In some casesthese have been transmitted a considerable dis-tance.Whatever delay has occurred,has tendedto the production of a better work than couldɔtherwise have been prepared.  \nNothing has been omitted that appeared im-portant to a complete history,while much willbe found not otherwise readily accessible to thegeneral reader.The admirable memoir of Ann  \nH.Judson,by the late beloved Knowles,has beenthe basis of most of the later productions con-  \ncerning Burmah and its missions,and has been,insome cases,too servilely copied.It has proved avaluable auxiliary in the present instance,but itsstatements have been carefully examined,andwhere incorrect amended.  \nIn accordance with the
