Each week they'll sit down with a different guest to find\n0:13\nout ways each of us have had to plan persevere and overcome to where we are now. The show will also highlight\n0:19\nresources and services that are working to make a difference at Valley college. We are joined this afternoon by Raul\n0:25.\nCastillo executive director of the foundation at Los Angeles Valley College. Thank you so much for joining us Raul.\n0:32\nOh thank you for having me Scott, thank you John. We've been wanting to talk with you for\n0:37\nquite some time now so we're really excited to have this opportunity and to be able to hear about your journey to\n0:43\nValley College and then to really dig in and get a much richer understanding of the foundation and all the different\n0:49\nways that it it contributes to the college and the community. So with that in our typical fashion we like to throw\n0:56\nout the invitation to our guests to take your story as far back as you'd like to go in terms of how you ultimately got\n1:03\nhere to Valley college, and so if if that journey begins you know in kindergarten and you take us all the way through it.\n1:09\nThat's awesome if you want to jump ahead a little bit that's okay too but it is oftentimes helpful just to hear sort of\n1:14\nthe steps along the way and sort of framing how you got here. Yeah well you know i've listened to a few of the\n1:20\npodcasts the two of you have done and so i mean I’ll take you way back when uh\n1:26\nfirst off I am an alumnus of Los Angeles Valley College it has to start with just\n1:32\nlike a lot of our typical students i mean many families immigrated here\n1:37\nand my family was among them you know my family immigrated to the united states on listen to this july 4th\n1:44\n1974 and i remember that first night my dad would came ahead of us and\n1:50\ngot an apartment near echo park and later that night i hear these loud\n1:56\nexplosions and popping and i'm thinking that there was a war going on outside but it was just a fourth of july\n2:01\ncelebration so so that's how it started for us we moved to the san fernando valley in 1977\n2:09\ni attended a nearby catholic school in high school called st genevieve high school in panorama city when i graduated\n2:16\nfrom there i was kind of hoping to enroll in a nearby catholic university\n2:23\nbut my grades just weren't up to par so the other thing too it would have been really really expensive to go to that\n2:30\nschool and so you know i decided that the best and most economical way to go about higher\n2:36\neducation is to attend community college and los angeles valley colleges wasn't\n2:41\nfar from where i grew up in in arlida let me stop you or interrupt you for just a second just to wind it back a\n2:47\nlittle bit just for some more details there about that that sort of experience so where did your parents immigrate from\n2:53\nuh the philippines okay and so when when your family came here did you have other family who was\n2:58\nalready living in the area did you come with siblings what was that experience like that you recall yeah uh so my dad\n3:05\ncame first you know he came here to find a job we were actually supposed to\n3:10\nlive in orlando florida but because my dad had family in san francisco and la\n3:16\nthey convinced him you know you can start a living here there's a lot of opportunities so\n3:21\nyou know he got a job with pacific bell which was part of the\n3:27\namerican telephone and telegraph company att and he got a part-time clerical job at\n3:32\nthe los angeles time because he could type 75 words a minute so that the man worked really hard he\n3:39\nwould get up he would leave the house at six o'clock and come home at nine o'clock at night my mom also worked and\n3:46\ni have two younger siblings one other sibling also attended los angeles valley college she went on transferred to cal\n3","cbCaiercqzuoeD1f","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiercqzuoeD1f","docx",69793,45,"English","# Valley College Connection概述\n## 嘉宾与访谈主题\n## 家庭移民经历与成长起点\n## 从高中到社区大学的过渡\n## 校园辅导与学业规划","[{\"question\":\"Raul Castillo进入洛杉矶谷学院的个人背景是什么？ \"}]","Raul Castillo Valley College Connection - Interview Story | DOCX"]
