AN ANONYMOUS TARTAR \nThe comet. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1857. 8vo. [ii], 91 pp. Original publisher’s red cloth, illustration of a comet in gilt on front cover. An excellent nearly perfect copy. \nFirst and only edition of this fascinating work of black utopian literature. Our story is set thirty years in the future (from the publication date of 1857) and details the events that occurred in the city of Melbourne of the Dis-United States. In 1857, a comet collided with the earth, resulting in the collapse of civilization. Ethnic roles reversed, with black people assuming superiority over the white race. (Apparently, according to the narrator, black people were better able to handle the increased heat resulting from the comet.) Satirical in tone, this uncommon book examines race, religion and contemporary society as it stood in the midnineteenth century. \nRare; OCLC locates 3 copies worldwide (Stanford; Wagner Free Institute of Science Library; British Library) . $ 2500.00 \nEIGHTEENTH CENTURY ANGER MANAGEMENT \n2. [ANONYMOUS] \nAn earnest appeal to passionate people: wherein the re ise, progress, and consequences of that unhappy disposition of mind are fully displayed; and the possibility of conquering that temper, illustrated from several characters in real life. To which is added, an essay on envy, malice, and detraction. London: printed for W. Owen, 1748. 8vo.[iv], 63 pp. Woodcut initials, headand tailpieces. Wrappers; minor spotting, sizeable piece torn from the last leaf not affecting the main text, but deleting several lines of the advertisements on the verso. \nFirst edition. Bad temper, road rage, fights on airplanes, public displays of anger, these are all things we have become both used to and inured by. It is, apparently, not a condition born out of our fast-moving and technologically-advanced society. \nAdvice for countering seemingly uncontrollable rage has been offered by ancient philosophers, pious men, and modern psychologists. \nThe anonymous author, in addressing the problems associated with passion (or the “over-passionate” person), treats the condition as a “disease of the mind.” He describes that person as one “who is on fire upon every trifling occasion, raves, rants and tears for a moment, and next minute subsides to a perfect calm: he is pleased and displeased at the turning ofa straw, is angry with himself and all about him, without being able to give any rational account of the rise of his passion; his whole life in one continued circle of offending and asking pardon.” The mental issues, which (apparently) stem from pride, self-conceit and “want of thought,” are closely examined. Of particular interest is a discussion of nature versus nurture. Many suffer from this psychological malady as a hereditary condition, and those are not incurable. Others, however, slowly sink into the despair brought on by bouts of anger by environmental reasons, which can happen at any time during one’s life. The author of course describes specific cases to illustrate each situation. $ 2500.00 \nWHEN PARLIAMENT AND THE KING \nWERE NOT ON THE SAME PAGE \n3.
