Doing so will help you: \n• Identify the member’s product. \n• Obtain health plan contact information. \n• Speed claims processing. \nRemember: ID cards are for identification purposes only; they do not guarantee eligibility or payment of your claim. You should always verify patient eligibility by calling 800-676-BLUE (2583). \nThe following information is provided to assist your Plan with provider education about Medicare Advantage and inter-Plan business. While the information is believed to be accurate, you should review it carefully to make sure it is appropriate for use by your Plan. Please exercise caution when using the provider materials. However, there are some exceptions. ID cards for the following products and programs do not have an alpha prefix: \n􀁸 Stand-alone vision and pharmacy when delivered through an intermediary model* \n􀁸 Stand-alone dental products* \n􀁸 The BCBS Federal Employee Program (FEP)– The letter “R” appears in front of the ID number.* \n*Follow instructions on these ID cards to verify eligibility, submit claims and obtain health plan contact information. \nThe alpha prefix is critical for inquiries regarding the member, including eligibility and benefits, and is necessary for proper claim filing. \n􀁸 When filing a claim, always enter the ID number, including the alpha prefix, exactly as it appears on the member’s card. \n􀁸 Always include the member’s ID number, including the alpha prefix, on any documents pertaining to services to ensure accurate handling by the BCBS Plan. \nA member’s ID number includes the alpha prefix in the first three positions and all subsequent characters ‒ between 6 and 14 numbers or letters ‒ up to 17 characters total. The following are examples of ID numbers with the alpha prefix highlighted: \nABC 1234567 \nAlpha Prefix \nABC 1234H567 \nAlpha Prefix \nABC D1234H567 \nAlpha Prefix \nABC D1234H56789012 \nAlpha ","cbCaiuUS7qNL38tz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuUS7qNL38tz","pdf",1067079,"English","# Introduction\n## Alpha Prefixes\n## Member ID Card\n## Federal Employee Program ID Cards","[{\"question\":\"Why should providers request to see a patient’s current BCBS member ID card at each visit?\",\"answer\":\"Requesting the current ID card helps identify the member’s product, obtain health plan contact information, and speed claims processing.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the alpha prefix mean on BCBS member ID numbers?\",\"answer\":\"Most BCBS branded ID cards include a three-character alpha prefix in the first three positions, and it is critical for inquiries about eligibility and benefits and for proper claim filing.\"},{\"question\":\"Do member ID cards guarantee eligibility or claim payment?\",\"answer\":\"No. ID cards are for identification purposes only and do not guarantee eligibility or payment of a claim; providers should verify eligibility by calling 800-676-BLUE (2583).\"},{\"question\":\"How are Federal Employee Program (FEP) member ID cards different from other BCBS cards?\",\"answer\":\"FEP member ID cards do not have a three-character alpha prefix; FEP identification numbers begin with the letter “R,” and providers should follow the separate FEP documentation for details.\"}]","Quick Guide to Blue Cross and Blue Shield Member ID Cards | PDF",1790252741,6]
