INTRODUCTION  \nA provisional patent application in India is an initial step in the patent filing process that allows inventors to secure a priority date for their invention while giving them time to refine their invention or gather additional data before filing a complete specification. Under the Indian Patent Act of 1970, the concept of a provisional application was introduced to provide a costeffective and simplified method for inventors to establish an early filing date, which is crucial in the patenting process given the \"first to file\" principle. A provisional patent application is a preliminary application that does not require a full description of the invention. It serves as a placeholder that allows the inventor to claim the priority date from the filing of the provisional application.
