It outlines how to build the plan by defining work buckets (phases and milestones), detailing tasks and durations, and mapping them on a calendar. It further covers establishing a project schedule using a Work Breakdown Structure, estimating task durations, defining dependencies, sequencing work, assigning resources, setting due dates, and performing schedule review before translating it into an operational project plan using tools like Excel, Sheets, or project software.",{"@graph":63,"@context":119},[64,80,102],{"@type":65,"itemListElement":66},"BreadcrumbList",[67,71,74,77],{"item":68,"name":69,"@type":70,"position":9},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":72,"name":10,"@type":70,"position":73},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/",2,{"item":75,"name":11,"@type":70,"position":76},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/presentations/",3,{"item":78,"name":59,"@type":70,"position":79},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/project-plan-guidance-build-a-practical-project-schedule-and-calendar/241479/",4,{"url":78,"name":59,"@type":81,"image":82,"author":87,"headline":59,"publisher":90,"fileFormat":93,"inLanguage":57,"description":61,"dateModified":94,"datePublished":95,"encodingFormat":93,"isAccessibleForFree":96,"interactionStatistic":97},"DigitalDocument",{"url":83,"@type":84,"width":85,"height":86},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/project-plan-guidance-build-a-practical-project-schedule-and-calendar/241479.png","ImageObject",442,249,{"name":88,"@type":89},"\tCallum ","Person",{"url":68,"name":91,"@type":92},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-14","2026-09-12",true,{"@type":98,"interactionType":99,"userInteractionCount":101},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":100},"ViewAction",13,{"@type":103,"mainEntity":104},"FAQPage",[105,111,115],{"name":106,"@type":107,"acceptedAnswer":108},"How do the Project Charter and Project Plan differ?","Question",{"text":109,"@type":110},"The Project Charter sets the project vision at a high level and is a snapshot stored in a static document. To work toward a Project Plan, you’ll want to identify: \n1. What are the “buckets of work” (phases)? \n2. What are the tasks for each bucket, and how long will they take? \n3. How does all of this plot out on a calendar? \n1. Identify the “buckets of work”(phases). \nThe “buckets of work” are your project’s phases and milestones. Use the list you put in your Project Charter (Part IV. Project Schedule & Milestones) . \nExample: \nBefore you proceed…Please note that can do \\#2 and \\#3 in the order that works best for you, ordo them simultaneously. Remember, you’re putting together a puzzle! \n2. Identify the tasks for each “bucket”, and how long they will take (project schedule). \nYour goal is to figure out as much of the work as you can so you can come up with a reasonable schedule. It’s not always clear or easy to know at this stage what all of the tasks will be, so ask your project team and anyone else doing the work. You also might want to consulta generative AI tool to see if it helps generate ideas for tasks (and it might come up with things that are beneficial that you hadn’t thought of) . Here are \nSTEPS TO ESTABLISH A PROJECT SCHEDULE \n1. Define your project. If you already wrote a Project Charter, then you’re done. At this step you want to know the scope, deliverables, stakeholders, and general timeline for your project. \n2. Identify tasks by creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Break the project down into a list or diagram that represents everything the project must accomplish. A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is commonly used to assist in this process. \n• RECOMMENDATION: Use [https://app.diagrams. net/](https://app.diagrams. net/ to create a WBS)[ to create a WBS](https://app.diagrams. net/ to create a WBS) (similar to Visio, free, requires no login) . Here are the steps: \n1. Go to [https://app.diagrams. net/](https://app.diagrams. net/) \n[2](2). Click ... (top right) \n3. File > New \n4. Search for “breakdown” (top left) \n5. Select the template and hit Create \n6. Double-click a square to change the text \n7. Start by identifying all top-level key deliverables or phases, then work your way down each lane \n3. Estimate durations. Estimate the amount of time that each task is expected to take. Three-Point Estimation is often used to provide realistic values. Don’t forget to set a Schedule Reserve to accommodate unexpected delays. \n4. Identify dependencies. Determine which tasks are reliant on others. Dependencies can be Finish to Start, Start to Start, Finish to Finish, or Start to Finish. \n5. Sequence tasks. Define the logical sequence of the work to be done. A Project Network Diagram may help to visualize, especially on a compressed timeline with several tasks occurring simultaneously. \n6. Assign resources. Assign people, equipment, materials, physical space, and other resources to the tasks. Be wary of over-relying on one resource and consider that outside resources may have additional constraints. \n7. Set due dates. Set realistic due dates for milestones and deliverables. \n8. Review. Review the whole schedule. Look for gaps or conflicts, make sure resources aren’t overextended, identify risks, take note of action items, and plan for potential delays. \n3.
