Using Milestones \nWhy Do We Need Project Management? \nYou may think that project management as a discipline is a relatively new phenomenon, only having come into existence during the industrial revolution, but you’d be wrong. The history of project management goes back over 3,000 years. Although mostly undocumented, almost all great human projects would have necessitated project management to ensure their coordinated and successful completion. These endeavors include: \n• Stonehenge (circa. 3,000 B.C.) \n• The pyramid at Giza (circa 2,560 B.C.) \n• The Great Wall of China (206 B.C.) \n• The Colosseum (70 AD) \nThe great pyramid at Giza was built as a tomb for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu. It is made of some 2.3 million blocks of stone, weighing in at over 5.9 million tonnes. It was built over a period of 20 years and involved some 100,000 workers to build. \nEven though it may not have been known by the name project management, project management would have been required \nto ensure the pyramid at Giza was built in a systematic and controlled manner by the 100,000 people involved in building it. The same is true for all the other great human achievements listed above. \nThe project management for all of these structures would have involved lots of the tasks we might recognize today from project management. This would include planning the work to be done, and the order in which it should be done. Ensuring that the right quality of work is being done as work progresses, rectifying problems as they arise, and communicating the status of progress to the person who commissioned the project. \nThe takeaway from this section is to realize that project management isn’t something invented by large corporations or MBA graduates to add bureaucracy and slow initiatives down, but something that is both necessary and vital in order for complex undertakings to be completed successfully. \nProject Management Accreditations \nBefore we go any further, now is a good a time as any to explain that various professional qualifications exist for project management, each overseen by a different body. Whilst each of these qualifications are different from the other there is also much that overlaps. \nFor the purposes of this book it is not important to understand the differences between these qualifications but it is important to know that these qualifications exist. The main ones are, in no particular order: \n• PMP: Project Management Professional. This qualification is provided by the PMI (Project Management Institute), and is the most widely recognized project management qualification globally. The PMP qualification is based upon knowledge of PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) . \n• PRINCE2: PRojects IN a Controlled Environment. A project management qualification sponsored by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC) . \n• PMQ: Project Management Qualification. A project management qualification overseen by the Association of Project Managers Group (APMG) \nWhat is a Project? \nAll kinds of initiatives can be projects, for example: \n• Creating a new product or service. \n• Changing the organizational structure of an organization. \n• Running a political campaign. \n• Constructing a building or structure such as a bridge. \n• The takeover/purchase of another business/organization. \n• Sending a man to mars. \nGiven such variety, and before we begin to discuss the best techniques for managing projects, what do all these projects have in common? \nTo answer this question, l","cbCaigC6n3Q3wxLS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigC6n3Q3wxLS","pdf",7059982,112,"English","# Why Do We Need Project Management?\n# Project Management Accreditations\n# What is a Project?\n# Project Management\n# Key People in Project Management\n# Key Aspects of a Project: Scope, Cost, Time, Quality, and Risk\n# RAID Management\n# The Project Life Cycle\n# Using Milestones","[{\"question\":\"Why is project management necessary?\",\"answer\":\"Project management enables coordinated planning and controlled execution for complex undertakings.
