For every role you apply to, several hundred other people will be applying for the same position. Your cover letter is the opportunity to make sure your application stands out. \nThis is the place for you to tell more about the projects and experience that are most relevant to the specific job that you're applying for. If the cover letter is not specific (or if you don't have one), it's unlikely that a recruiter will consider you a legitimate candidate. \nHOW TO PREPARE A COVER LETTER \nAs with most types of writing, great cover letters are developed from a great outline. Here’s what to include in each cover letter that you write. \nTIP 1 \nDO YOUR RESEARCH. \nWhen applying for a position, do a bit of research to find out who the recruiter or HR contact person is and address them by name to make it personal. Use Sir/Madam as a last resort. \nTIP 2 \nSTAND OUT. \nInstead of opening with \"I am applying for the position of [X]\", try to stand out by opening with a fact that is compelling and unique to you. Need some ideas? Here are several examples to get the creative juices flowing. You can always include the job title as a header or subject line. \nTIP 3 \nSHOW HOW YOU CAN ADD VALUE . \nBe sure to focus the majority of your cover letter (at least two thirds), on the value that you can add to the company by filling that role. This often arrives in the form of transferrable skills. Include at least three skills that have been requested in the job description. \nTIP 4 \nLIST TRANSFERABLE SKILLS. \nEach transferrable skill should have its own paragraph. You may start the paragraph by saying something like,“I’m able to stay calm under pressure” then be sure to jump into a past experience that illustrates you using this skill. These paragraphs should each tell one story about a transferrable skill. \nTIP 5 \nINCLUDE RESULTS. \nBe sure to also include the results of your work in the closing line of each paragraph! For example, you may state the new revenues earned or the time saved as a result of your work. Each of your transferrable skills should have a story that leads to a quantifiable result. \nTIP 6 \nINCLUDE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS. \nDon’t forget to include your contact details on your cover letter to make a call-back effortless. These would include your email address, phone number (including international dialling code), and LinkedIn URL. \nWant to take your outline a step further? \nHere are a few more points to check when deciding what to include in your cover letter. \nCOVER LETTER GUIDE AND TEMPLATE \nGET WRITING…AND EDITING \nIf you’ve made a great outline, filling it in should be a breeze. Here is a strong template to help with the writing. \nAfter you’ve finished a first draft, edit, edit, edit. Ask your career services team to review your cover letter and give feedback. Then ask for a more detailed read from a classmate. If you’re applying in a language that isn’t your mother tongue, ask a native speaker to review the cover letter for grammar mishaps or confusing sentence structure. Expect that your cover letter will go through 5-10 different versions before it looks right. \nCUSTOMISE YOUR COVER LETTERS \nCustomising your cover letter for the particular job that you’re applying for shows the recruiter that you have a deep understanding of the job description. This means learning all about the company, what they need from you in this role, and how you fit in to their larger strategy. \nThis understanding will shine through in your cover letter and goes a long way in convincing them that you are the exact person they are looking for. If you submit a ‘one-size-fits-all’ cover letter, it is unlikely that you will get many calls for interview. For most recruiters, a generic cover letter means you’re not suitable for the job. \nREVIEW, ","cbCaiqBbRXNm6EtP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqBbRXNm6EtP","pdf",264905,"English","# Why Do a Cover Letter?\n## How to Prepare a Cover Letter\n## Cover Letter Guide and Template\n## Get Writing and Editing\n## Customise Your Cover Letters\n## Review, Feedback, Iterate\n## At a Loss for What to Check?","[{\"question\":\"Why is a cover letter important for job applications?\",\"answer\":\"A cover letter helps your application stand out among many candidates.
