A former English teacher at Westridge School, where she attended before she transferred to Prep, Anne also has a master’s degree in English from UCSD. She leaves a legacy of extraordinary reporting, interpretation, writing, and design for PrepTalk and the Annual Report. Her publications are among the most popular in recent memory. We wish her all the best as she pursues her new career path.  \nLetters  \nWhat a hoot it was to see the photo in PrepTalk of the group of guys gathered around, on, and in the ’49 Ford in the parking lot. I think the picture was taken in 1952. The parking lot was the center of the Prep universe for a few minutes each day before classes, during lunch break, and briefly after school.  \nWhite t-shirts and Levis were the uniform of the day. I think I recognize many of those in the picture (from left to right): John Clark ‘53, the back of Stan Morner’s ‘53 head, Walter Thorndike ‘52, Tom Berne ‘53, Dick Riddell ‘53, driver unknown, unknown, Harris Hartman ‘52, unknown, and Jim Lucas ‘53 . In the background are the school bus, the outdoor basketball court (we had no gym), and the oak trees that grew on the hillside.  \nThings sure have changed since then! Malibu High School. We hate to remember that afternoon but can’t forget it. On that day, Flintridge football, and for some, perceptions of Prep athletics, lay in tatters. Quarterback Clayton Weirick ‘13 brought down with an injury. Several plays later, Stefan Smith ‘14 out, leaving a single-digit roster that was later forced to forfeit two games. Could Rebel football ever recover? Could the historic role of athletics as a central part of the balanced Prep experience remain vibrant?  \nOf course, we knew that many Prep programs were robust, spearheaded by defending CIF Champion boys’ basketball and State-contending cross country. But the travails of football threatened to become a metaphor for Prep athletics, and nothing less than a multi-pronged strategy would persuade students, parents, alumni, and prospective families of the school’s commitment to sports. So the Board of Trustees, administration, athletics department, faculty members, and student leaders cooperated to develop steps for immediate implementation.
