Every day ® \n©2024 The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia \nIt may be the most difficult choices we \nhave ever had. \nMost seasons, it is reasonably easy to limit Player of the Year nominees to just five. That certainly has not been the casein 2024. \nInfact, even creating two categories did not fairly cover all of the ground. Noah Bremer and Max Green, who jumped into starting roles, becoming mainstays in the rotation and ranking near the top in the three“Triple Crown” pitching categories (W, SO, ERA) in the league seemed like obvious choice. Gaige Howard ranked among the top five in the ALPB in batting. Shawon Dunston, Jr. had a chance for a 20 HR – 50 SB season. Chris Proctor has been able to swing back and forth between his normal catching role and the outfield early in the year, and then catch virtually every game for six weeks in the second half, all while maintaining a strong offensive season. \nThat left out two other stalwarts, Joseph Carpenter and Trace Loehr. Loehr, the reigning ALPB top defensive third baseman, has had another fabulous year at the position. Carpenter’s numbers have exploded lately. \nThose have been the stalwarts. However, in any Atlantic League season, mid-season acquisitions can make or break the year. After Cristian Santana headed to Mexico \nin mid-June, the offense was left with a significant hole. How do you replace a guy who drove in 47 runs and batted .423 in 35 games? \nNot with one person was the answer. Rather with four. Damon Dues joined the club in mid-June and has been a force in the leadoff spot ever since then. Never known as a power hitter, he has been able to carry a slugging percentage slightly over.500 with an assortment of doubles and triples in all directions and an occasional ball over the short porch in right field at Clipper Magazine Stadium. \nTwo weeks later, slugging outfielder Niko Hulsizer returned from Mexico. Not long after, he had the biggest inning and the biggest day of any Stormer ever when he slammed three homers and drove in nine against the Long Island Ducks. The RBI total was a franchise record. He hit a three-run homer and grand slam in the same inning, becoming only the second Stormers player to homer twice in the same inning, joining Blake Gailen on the short list. \nThe day following Hulsizer’s reactivation, Mason Martin joined the club. In spring training, Martin belonged to the York Revolution and had his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Angels. When it became time for the muscular first baseman to return to the Atlantic League there was \nno room for him on the York roster, so he became a free agent, signing with the Stormers. By late August, he took over the team lead in homers for the season and had become only the second player in team history to slug three grand slams in one year. \nThe same week that Hulsizer returned and Martin signed, Isan Diaz was also ready to go. The former Miami Marlins utility infielder had gotten off to a good start, batting safely in 13 of 14 games and hitting.333 when he sustained an injury during a game at Staten Island. Seven weeks later, he came back. Diaz recently put together not only a long hitting streak but an extra base hit streak and record-level RBI streak as well.
